Default What to get? Transmission jack adaptor or a dedicated jack?

Can I do a transmission swap with this guy...
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...70_19795_19795

Or should I bother to get the real deal?
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...5489_200305489

Keep in mind that I'm not a shop... and that I don't plan on changing transmissions for a living!

As Dan stated, I also had good luck with an ATV/motorcycle jack.

I bought this cheapie and have used it a few times. It works although you do need to muscle it when lifting - i.e you need some leverage to turn the lead screw to lift.

If you can afford a hydraulic option it will be easier.

The jack adapter looks pretty good. Since when I replaced my transmission i just used the regular jack, I imagine the adapter would work fine. I plain jack works ok, but you need someone under the car to balance the transmission on the jack. Kind of a PITA. I would get the adapterif I had to do it again.

I tried using a jack adapter -- but if you're working on your car sitting on jack stands, there is no way you can get enough clearance. A jack + adapter combo is very very tall. I ended up using just the jack and throwing away the silly adapter.

if you have two people I dont think You'll need the adapter. One for the jacking/wrenching and one for balancing/moving/cursing at the tranny

I used the heavy duty craftsman jackstands at the rear. I was able to get the back of the car around 24" off the ground.

24" tall jackstands? Where did you have those things under the car? I have my car pretty high trying to keep in mind the 20" clearance issue. Where is that measurement taken?

I was trying to keep from involving friends in the repair. I like to move at my own pace and try not to bother my pals too much.

Jack stands aren't 24". I think it was from the rear bumper bottom to the ground.

Good- I think I have close to 36"! Plenty of room.
My supplier just dropped off the AOS tonight. Now I need to get serious about getting it fixed!

If you have two people then it is super easy - just did this job. Safer that way anyway - although I would like to have one of those ATV jacks.......

A regular floor jack is fine with two people. Don't put the trans in what appears to be the "center". Put it on the flat area right behind where it doesn't curve. The center of the "curve" I'm talking about is the CV joint flange. The trans is very rear-heavy

The HF 6-ton jackstands are 24" at max. Put that under the frame and you will have at least 32" at the rear bumper. My HF trans/jack adaptor worked great. I'm jaded and try to find things that work because I work alone a lot. A friend just gave me a folding 3-ton engine hoist today; now I'm all set for the swap on the Sapphire 86...Life is good!
