Default Replacing Coolant Overflow tank...(searched)

I'm replacing the bulged/cracked coolant overflow tank on my '86 944 with a new(er) one from eBay... According to the Haynes manual I basically just lower the coolant level, unbolt the tank, and disconnect the hoses....and then do the reverse to install the new one.

Are there any "gotchas" I should keep an eye out for or is it pretty straightforward?

Thanks!
Jeff

It's straight forward. My car is a turbo, but it is basically the same procedure. There are different ways to lower your coolant level. I completely drained mine due to other work I was doing. You could take it as an opportunity to drain and flush your coolant system before winter. You just have to deal with bleeding it when you refill. If you don't want to drain it, I would buy a cheap hand pump or just a hose and siphon it out of the reservoir. If you do follow Clark's procedure and drain from the bottom, I would just pull the lower radiator hose near the PS pump from the radiator to drain. There is no way I would mess with the radiator drain plug and risk breaking it when you can pull the hose and it does the same thing. Hope that helps.

Good tip about pulling the lower radiator hose instead of using the drain plug... I'll give that a try.

Thanks!

This is for a 951, but maybe you could "engineer" it to work with your motor? Should be simple enough I think...

Is it that hard to look at a vendor page? About $75.

I 'think' the only difference between the 951 tank and the regular 944 tank is provision for the turbo waterpump.

Edit - I just looked at Lindsays page, i am pretty sure if you order the 'dry turbo' one it will work without modification on a n/a car.

The metal one is very nice. The teflon tape on the pipe fittings scare me.

if there was no tape it would scare me...steel into Aluminum, you need the tape...I would hope it was put on without having loose ends hanging over the end of the treads

the part I am not thrilled on is the tube that shows the fluid level....I have those push fittings on a machine I own and they are forever leaking.
