If you don't know how old the pump is replace it.

Replace the water pump whenever you replace your belts. At the very least, you save on labor and prevent overheating. Use a stethescope and listen for a loud rattle (think marbles) from the rollers. Good rollers make no sound. If you hear marbles, replace the rollers.

Cool, thanks for all the info guys. I'll get the waterpump done - I'll see if they use the newer version/design.

Any idea how many labor hours something like this usually runs? I think they might already have it down as an hour each for the coolant flush and tranny fluid...

If it's original I would replace it. My original (old style) pump only lasted about 40K miles.

The consensus is usually every other belt change.

Ok, they just called back with a full quote - they said it was going to be five hours labor to do the belts only (no new rollers or anything) was going to be ~$1k, and if they were to do a new water pump and upgrade to the newer design it would be up to ~$2k. Said the new pump costs $570 or something? He said a rebuilt pump was only 200 something and covered by the factory warrantee, and wouldn't require upgrading all the mouting hardware, but if I do the pump I'll go with the new one.

Are these hours/prices normal? ****, for 2k now I'm almost tempted to do the belts/pump myself (which I wouldn't have time to do at the rate I'm going until after this track day I'm paid for on nov 2) and if something happens before then I'll put that 2k to a new motor.

Ok, I canceled the appointment to get the work done tomorrow since it was so expensive. Anybody have any experience ordering parts from Zim's? http://www.allzim.com/

I just replaced my ORIGINAL water pump when i did my belts at 143K miles...the thing was fused to the engine block, pain in the butt!!! anyways, works great now...the original pump wasn't even that bad off...better safe than sorry

i went through 4 AC compressors with Zims before i got one that didn't break after a couple months!!! they are great about replacing parts under warrenty with no questions asked though...go for a brand new pump, i don't trust anything rebuilt that deals with my engine...just my opinion

Seems like you have a new interest in wrenching!

That's the beauty of Renn, post a thread for a front end re-seal get togeather, and get some parts on order. I don't have much experience with Zimms (site is a pain in the butt), but Sunset and Paragon are amazing.

I have done the belt a few times without doing the pump. Really the belts are a 60 min job on a NA and maybe 90 min on a turbo.

Like Stan said what gets time consuming and expensive is doing the rollers, waterpump, and front seals.

Heck to put this in persective I can change the belts on my coverless 944 NA racer in 30 min.

What actually goes bad in the w/p? I did mine and don't recall it being that complex. Why would a re-built one be so bad?

in my 84 daily driver my waterpump started making noise. I replace it and did the t-belts at the same time since I was in there. It was the original 75k mile unit.

the seal on the pulley where it goes thru the waterpump body to the impeller can wear and leak.
