Default "tuning" a NA

Alright, so I know on the later cars there is a veriaty of chips you can put in to remap the ECU (timing and ignition i assimue). So can you do this on an early car? I hear they are just EPROM chips, so it would not be to hard or expensive to midify the mappings.

The only reason i want to do this is if i start running 100+ octane in the race car, I figure an ecu remap is good for a "few" hp. Now i dont know a lot about these engines, but I'm assuming a remap to race gas could be almost 10hp, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Anyone know about this? I'm just looking for information as I have enough stuff for the car to keep me busy.

Yes, but the early cars' chips are soldered onto the board. FRwilk used to make an adapter board for the early car, or you can swap the ECU out for a later socketed one alond with the AFM. Neither of those 2 options are very cheap either, especially since the adapter board is apparently no longer being made.

If you're good with a solder and like that kind of stuff, you can modify the old ECU. If not, get a late one with matching AFM. Then you can just buy a chip too.

I've heard claims that a chip for an early NA will give 2 or 3 hp, that's with 91 octane. The main purpose of the chips were to eliminate the ****'ing 944 NA shudder.

10hp would be nice. If there were a cheap way to get cams too, you could get a worthwhile power gain.

Thats not a bad Idea, but it you can get even 1hp per octane point going from 89 to 100 "should" yeild 11hp... "should" being that key word.

What i was really asking was, has anyone mapped out the EPROM chips? I dont really feel like swapping ECU's (will they just swap with no problems?) and AFM's (again, will they swap with no problem?).

Yes everything swaps pretty easily.
Your best option will be to find the Wilks stuff.

if you find the wilk stuff make sure you dyno it. I had seen some busted up motors due to bad A/F ratios with Wilk chips. Not sure why, but it maybe due to the differences in 944 spec motor vs what most street cars run.

Joe, when i get my car back together i am defenetley going to have it dynoed with a wideband AFR in the tail pipe. Ive been running FRWilk's chip for over two years and recently blew the headgasket on my '87. It could just be due to age (90k miles on it) but id like to be absolutley sure to prevent this from happening again.

Find a good used DME/AFM from a later model. Works better IMHO. Then you always have a back up DME/AFM and chips go in and out. Throttle response is better too (me thinks).

From what I've heard, only an '85.5 ECU will swap into an early 944. Anything later you need to change the harness. Correct?

My 83 had a brain transplant (plus AFM) from an 87 and works flawlessly.

did you have to mess with any of the wiring? Or was it just a "plug and play" opperation?
