Default Demonizied 944

Hey all. I have a N/A 944 and it has an intermittent misfire attributed to a dead # 4 cylinder. It only happens on start-up and lasts for 5-10 mins then clears up. I have done a full tune-up and various test but still cannot figure it out. Any help will be much appreciated.

Blown headgasket resulting in coolant seepage into the cylinder?

The only problem with that is that it has no symptoms of a blown head gasket.

Do a compression test.

Check your coolant tank for oil, and check your oil dipstick for milkshake. Watch your coolant level. And as Epic said do a compression test.

This happened to me a few days ago. When the car is running rough, imediatley shut the car down. Pull all four plugs and if one is wet, you have a blown headgasket. Look into each cylinder also. If the leak is bad enough you will see coolant sitting in the cylinder.

I also had NO other symptoms of a blown headgasket. Atleast nothing major. No oil / coolant mixture, no overheating (though the temp gauge was getting some funky readings, it would change positions very quickly). NO white smoke out of the exhaust. I did a compression test and got even #'s on all four cylinders. I drove over 300 miles with the headgasket leaking (It only leaked when the car was shut off) and i burned no more than a half liter of coolant.

A week later of driving the car i pulled the plugs and saw coolant in the #3 cylinder..a day later i started tearing down the motor.

Another slight possibility is your injectors are leaking. But honestly i would lean more towards the headgasket issue. You can verify by checking fuel pressure.

But take my advice, start the car..if it runs rough, shut the car down imediatley (Dont wait for it to smooth out). Pull the plugs out and inspect them.

could be an injector sticking and flooding that cylinder out when you shut it off- after the motor warms up it could burn off the excess and run ok again. If you can pull the rail, and leave the injectors in the rail- place each injector in a glass-all four- and crank the motor a second- you often do this to measure ml of fuel coming out of each injector- but in this case you can see if its still leaking after you stop cranking the car.
