951 has more hp (or can easily get more hp) Boxster has a superior chassis.
driver independant stock or similarly modded.
Straight line 951 over boxster, wash stock 951 vs boxster S
Corners = boxster

The Boxster S is 15 years newer and is a superior vehicle - there really is no comparison (it would be sad if there was). Like any turbocharged vehicle, the 951 has a much better bang/buck ratio for initial go-fast mods.

I had a 2001 Boxster and my stock 951 S is definitely faster. The Boxster has a great power range and better and low RPM. The Boxster is much better in slower turns like auto-X, but for higher speed turns the 951 is as good or maybe better. The 951 S has a much tighter suspension and makes for a rougher ride around town, plus the Boxster is just more comfortable in general. I'd take the Boxster for around town, auto-X, and in the mountains, but I take my 951 for DE/track and highway driving.

Cost has no place in a comparison with such large model year disparities, imo.

...I bought my 951 for 4k, it's never left me stranded (knock on wood) and it's my daily driver (about 50 miles a day). It's fairly heavily modified and would walk away from a Boxster. I don't know if you want to put this car on track or not but boost is addictive and with 10k in my pocket (if you consider the money I would have spent on a Boxster) I have some comfort room when it comes to parts replacement. The 951 is the better decision imho.

darth coupes wife has a boxster converted to a 3.4l 996 motor- now that is fun! About the same power as my turbo if i turned the boost up just alittle- pulls me on the straights some.

Another thing to consider is the difference in the amount of usable space you have in the 944. There are not many other Porsches where you can haul all of your gear right inside the car for a track weekend or autocross. Im talking four wheels with tires, a fold up chair, a cooler...etc.
Probably not a big issue for a weekend / fun car unless you make alot of Home Depot runs like me. But for someone who does not want to be bothered, or have the means to trailer the car to the venue or want to bother with towing something small with the Boxster it cant be beat.

Having looked at a Boxster last week, I'll agree- they have a LOT of trunk space for what they are (i.e. a heck of a lot more than a Z4 or 350Z), but you can't beat the 944/951 for contiguous trunk space. I don't know of many sports cars that you can haul a double bass in other than the 944...
