Have you thought about buying a 924? The timing belt tensioning is easier, and not fatal if you make a mistake.

the kriket should be 40 @ 1.5 back as you describe. I removed the WP belt guard and the idler just across from it to allow me to slide the kricket down the belt and get in the middle of the span. It worked great, I was expecting it to be more difficult. this is if you have an 87+ with the spring tensioner. I didn't measure at tdc exactly, the reading is more important 1.5 back on the slack side of the belt (long span). I checked like ten times and kept rotating the engine over with a wrench and it kept checking out as OK, no piston hitting the valves. it's been running well so far....about 60 miles on it since the belt job.

okay thanks Jason, It does feel awfully tight when turning it counterclockwise and this is with a cold engine.

I'm scared the belt will be stressed too much / too much stress on the pump.

I'll check one more time when the plugs are in then I'll just drive it to a porsche shop in a few weeks to get it tensioned properly.

I don't want to screw around with the belt tensioning and have a broken belt in a month or have the water pump leak soon after and then I won't have time to do this all over again until next summer.

before I go in for tensioning I want to run it a bit though to check for oil leaks or coolant leaks with my new seals/ pump......hopefully that will be okay.

I have an 87 924s that does not have the spring loaded tensioner. I do have a 9201 though. I always questioned the whole t-belt thing after the spring tensioner was introduced - a realy expensive tool, then just a spring? How do you get new vs. used belt figures with a spring? Retension? Try to understand the guys here. They are smart. I have tensioned my belts by feel and never had a problem. Not having used the kriket(except on 3.6 aircooled motor fan/alt belts) I am not sure of the figures you should get. My thrust here is don't go buy a 924/924s becaus of the belts. Also you can probably get what you need with the tools you have and a little patients. Sorry I can't help more.
