Default ALL MY83 pistons forged?

Do all 83 944 engines have forged pistons? Is this fact or rumor? I just picked up 2 engines... 1 good 83 engine and one S engine with a cracked block.. Just wondering..

I could be interested in "S" parts........

Yes, all the 83's had forged pistons and rods. They started using the cast pistons and rods in mid 84MY

The 83 and up to mid-84 were all forged rods. But don't confuse forged NA rods with forged turbo pistons though; two different animals completely. What page did that info come out of the Shop Manual?

Jgporsche you are not reading the workshop manual correctly. It states that the rods were forged steel/cast since february 1984. This means that all 944's produced before sometime in february of 1984 had forged connecting rods. The pistons in the USA market cars are cast, the Euro pistons are forged. All 944 Turbo's came with forged rods and pistons. All cranks are forged.

Hmmm... interesting thread, didn't know that. So what I need to do is swap the rods and maybe pistons from my 83 block into my 87?

I know there is an early-to-late engine swap thread somewhere....*runs off to search*

your '87 pistons have a higher compression ratio, 9.7:1 vs. 9.5:1 for the '83....there is nothing wrong with cast rods, and you are risking screwing something up in the process

87 pistons actually have the same compression as the 83's, it is the 88 pistons that have the higher compression ratio.

I plan on building up the 83 motor out of the car and then just swapping it out... nice to have a spare. Plus the 87 has 155K the top end is brand new but I am pretty sure the bottom end has not been opened. Not sure what my path will be just yet, but still good to know some of the differences between the two. Any way to tell from the outside, like casting marks on outside edges of the rods or what?

Not true, '87 944 and '87 924S have 9.7:1 compression. It is a fact. '88 cars had 10.2:1.

944CS, you might want to double check your info on the compression ratio for a 87. I don't have access to the shop manuals at the moment, but I pasted this chart from Paragon Products.
