Default Death of a Transmission (video)

Here's my offering to the Gods. Made a fatal 3 to 4 shift and all hell broke loose. The track is Texas Motor and yes, it was at night. The audio is pretty crappy but you will hear the clanging pretty well.

CRUNCH!!!

Anyway, anyone have a post 85.5 transmission close to Dallas for sale?

Been there, done that, have a couple of the T-shirts.

If you are going to be replacing the trans anyway, look for an 88 or 89 unit.

Mine wasn't so glorious, nor was it captured on film. Best of luck on the repair. We're all pulling for you.

I don't get it - why would shifting from 3 to 4 break stuff?

When was this event? I thought it was this next Friday, but after looking at the TMS site, it's a car show... Did they change the dates?

I don't know why it failed on the shift- may have been stress letting off the clutch? Once I disengaged the clutch, there was a grind. I think you might be able to hear a high-pitch whine just before I shifted, so it may have failed then and when I shifted, the pinion let go.

The event was last Saturday, a make up event from the rainout in July. TMS may not have had it relisted.

The video brings back memories, bad memories. That sound is awful.

The NA transmission can only take so much I guess. I lost a ring and pinion on a second gear shift at 5,000 RPM only! I did a 951 transmission swap that reduced my acceleration significantly, but was probably the most sound transmission I would ever have. Second gear is great for autocrosses as you can hold it longer and pick up more speed....

The video just reminded me of this song some guys in some Triumph club wrote: "Losing my transmission" by Spinal Tappets

Have had the chance to do a post-mortem autopsy?

I've not even had time to pull it into the garage! I'll remove one axle to get it to roll and then I'll tear into it. I'm not in too much of a hurry and I want to do it right.

Luckily if all else fails, Zims is down the street from where I used to live... I could have walked to their place. And 44partsandmore is close too... I'm in better shape than most.

When it's time to go - I don't think it makes much difference what gear you are going from or to. More than likely it's the (classic failure) ring and pinion. All it takes is an application of power to make it go when its time is due.

Just a bump to say I got an '89 S2 transaxle (AOS code) from Dave at 44partsandmoreparts this weekend. Made a good deal and even made a house call to drop it off at the house!

No excuses- the old one will probably be out this weekend.
