Default 944 cup, n/a motor in a 951

I currently race a 1986 944 turbo in GTS2. I am considering installing a S2 motor in the chassis and run competitive in GTS2 or install a N/A motor and run in 944 cup. If I run 944 cup can I still run my rear coil-overs w/ t-bars installed, turbo brakes and 16 x 8 wheels?

yes you can install an NA and run in cup. But you can also run in 944 super cup right now (assuming your turbo engine is not to modified).

www.944cup.com, you can find all the rules and what not.

Thanks. I realize I can run supercup, but between the small attendance and the "driveability" of the S2 has me leaning towards the cup class. Will I get a weight penalty for the turbo brakes and/or 16 x 8 wheels? I also have a 1983 944 donor car if I need components.

Well you would probably need to backdate the NA brakes. Or you might be able to fiddle your way in as Prepared 944 NA that is running big brakes. in 944 cup PCA prepared cars run with 100lbs penatly.

As for the rear coil overs and wheels. Prep to PCA Stock specs rather than SCCA specs and both are legal.

Best Idea to contact Dave Derecola (944 Cup diretor) however, just to make sure. http://44cup.com

S2 motor is still in the class of SuperCup. I think Marks did the same and is leading SuperCup in MidAtlantic in this year.

yup, an s2 is still Super Cup, ONLY 2.5L 944's are cup. Matt did do that this year, and with both great success and lots of wrench time.

Also, you can run the big brakes, but that takes you into prepaired (add 100lbs) but i dont think you cannot run the 8's on the car.

i emailed Dave today, I can run a turbo chassis, n/a motor AND trans. I can run under PCA rules as "preparred", run a chip, brakes, lsd, +1" wheel width( any dia is allowed) with a 100lb. penalty...

you probalbly don't want to run the 951 tranny however. Gearing would suck for the 2.5L NA motor. Given the low price of NA boxes get one of those. BTW... I thought PCA stock was +1 and prepared was +2 on wheel width. For an "N/A" that means 8's and 9's in stock (factory option was 7 & 8 fuchs) and 9 & 10 in prepared, but maybe I am wrong.

I would be willing to swap my motor and tranny for yours.
It only has 60,000 miles so it would be a good engine to start with.
Or if you just wanted to switch cars,

My guess is the cage and suspension on the 951 tub are worth more than a complete NA. That is why he is considering putting the NA stuff in to a 951 tub rather than building from an bare NA tub.

Hey a 944 tub with a nice cage and good suspension and no engine/tranny is worth 3-4 times as much stock running NA.

Really? I never knew that, I was failry sure 7's were about as big as you can go on the Cup side. I dont know though, but i do know 7's provide plenty of grip

haha, this is very true. Cages alone can set you back 2-5K... add in the suspension and other nice things... you are WAY over what a running 944 costs I have spent about 10K (including the car) on my race efforts, and I'm still on the cheap side of things.
