Found the manuals on my computer but no pinout..just flow diagrams.

I would really love to installl my piggyback and would be happy to do a picture FAQ if someone can find me a pinout for the early DME.... I can't read those flow diagrams at all. Makes my brain hurt

I would email the guru of the early DME - FR Wilk @ PowerPROM@frwilk.com. He'll know that info if he'll answer your email. His site about the DME can be found at http://frwilk.com/944dme/
Alot of his navigation gifs don't show, but you can mouse over. Personally, I switched to an 87 DME/AFM which smoothed the whole thing out, but that is off topic.

BTW, I now live in LA, but grew up in Ulster County. You guys used to kick our *** in sports back in the seventies when I lived there (Ellenville).

Wow, small world. Where abouts in ulster county? I'm out of HS so I really don't follow the sports anymore, but up until last year I know Red Hook was doing pretty well. I know Rhinebeck hasn't won a basketball game on us in 35 years... Thanks for the link, completely forgot about that FRwilk

Michael, was the 87' DME a direct plug-in to your existing harness for your 83' 944?
I have been thinking of going that route in conjunction with a matching AFM for my 84' NA.
TIA!

In order to run a late AFS in a early 944 is to swap the AFS and the DME. Both must be used, you cannot just use the AFS alone it must have the matching DME/ECU.

Yes the connections are identical, simple swap. Only issue now on a early 944 is the late has a ISV the early does not so how the DME reads the idle mixture is a mystery. May need an ISV installed but not certain on this.

Thanks Dal...I appreciate the info!
Michael, how does your car run at idle...do you have a Idle control motor?
Do the later J-boots for the 944 have a provision hole for these?
TIA

If you need a late ISV you'd also need the late (bigger diameter) ISV hoses. If anyone is doing this upgrade and needs a late ISV I'll gladly trade a late one for your early one..

So if I am getting rid of the stock AFM and am going to a MAF that reads 0-5v , should I get a late DME or my early one which goes to 12v??

Finally... I can't find a DME pinout...just the AFM pinout. Anyone have any other ideas?

It idles fine. Interestingly, the idle studders a litttle (like the early) with the stock chip installed, but with either performance chip ( I have two; one cheapo $25 dollar one and one Weltmeister chip), it idles perfectly with excellent throttle response.

I know what the J-boot is, but I am not sure about any provisions for an Idle control motor.

Here is a 944 turbo DME pin-out. I am not sure of how similar they are, but I reckon they are close.
I could not find a pin-out diagram for a NA 944 much less an early model. I searched all through my manual pdf CD, but mainly it emphasizes the 85.5 and later models. Hope this helps you

Very cool, that is very easy to read and if its not the same it will still give me a damn good idea. Thanks!

Before you get too far, measure the voltage on pin 3 of the AFM connector (VAF reference voltage). If the voltage is around 5V then you're OK. If the voltage is much greater than 5V, then you need a piggyback that will generate an output up to that voltage. If the voltage is >5V and the piggyback won't generate the proper output voltage, then get a late model 944 DME to use.

Yeah, I saw how early DMEs have unregulated voltage and late ones are 5v. I was planning on swapping out the AFM/DME from a late car. Thanks !
