automatic engine vs. manual engine
did a quick search and nothing came up...
Is there any difference between an engine off a 5 speed and one off a automatic? My dad insists there is and I dont believe him. I guess my real question is will a motor off a 5 speed fit right in into a automatic? Ive finally found a motor near by with the right price but need to double check. Its an 86 engine from a 5 speed car going into a 87 automatic.

The 86 will not have the oil level sender in the pan so you will have to use the 87 pan. The throttle cam is different so you will have to use the one off your old car since the auto has a kick down cable. The engine long block is otherwise identical. I am surprised it took you several years to find an engine for that thing. There are plenty of running engines around here for $400 to $500 all day long. How right is the price of this engine and have you heard it run in the car? The best way to make sure is a leakdown test or taking the head off to check the bores. When the engine is out, its highly recommended to spend the $350 for the engine gasket kit (top and bottom), waterpump (around $200), belts ($35), and clutch ($400). so you won't have to mess with the engine for another 10 years.

There are lots of engines for sale. Heck whenever I sell motors to spec guys, I sell them for around $400-$500. I have about 4 running parts cars with good engines. I am not sure how you can have problems finding a motor in Calif. If you can't find one here, you won't find one anywhere.
