You speaking of the axle nut on a 85 or older 944? If so the hole is for a cotter pin to prevent the nut from spinning off.

I think you are referring to the one nut on each wheel that is longer than a normal nut and has a hole in the end with visible serrations in the hole.

This was an original locknut that was ?Standard with Fuchs wheels and other wise optional.
A keylocked cover fitted over the nut and locked into the serrations. It then spun without resistance and made removing the nut without removing the locked cover theoretically impossible.

My car had these fitted without their locking covers and I replaced them with the more modern style of locknuts available from 944.com

The original handbook has a page with a photo showing how they work.

Haha I forgot about those. On top of the nut threw me off! First thing I removed when I bought mine was those wheel lock lugs.

They have some nice lug nuts at auto zone. I don't know what color i should go with though aiodized red, black,or chrome? I refinished my wheels yesterday did the sand down job and man did it make a huge difference! Now all it needs is new lugs

Just a note if you intend to track the car....get steel lugs.
