Default Did I mess up my water pump installations?

Okay so I helicoiled every single thread on the block because a few were stripped and the rest didn't look great, cleaned everything up with brake clean. then I used permatex ultra grey on both sides of the paper gasket before installing. I put a pretty thick bead (3mm?) on both sides then used my fingers to get it all over evenly. Then I put the gasket on the water pump then slid the water pump on installed all bolt. I left them pretty loose for about 1 hour then cam back and by then the silicone was not wet anymore and looked cured and I turned the bolts to tighten them up and torqued it down with my click wrench to 7 ft-lbs

Now I'm worried that I may have waited too long and did not tighten the bolts until about an hour.

Other thing that I'm really worrying about now is that I forgot that there was a tiny hole on the water pump and also on the block for coolant and I"m worried that this hole may be cloged up not by the rtv which I used on both sides of the paper gasket..... that hole is pretty tiny and I have silcone oozing off the edge of the pump so it's possilbe I fully cloged teh hole.

so am I screwed now or what? I really don't want to rip off the pump now.

IMO using permatex is not necessary - I do not know of one Porsche mechanic I would trust that would ever use the stuff on a water pump.

I know I like to use it for peace of mind because the mating surfaces are usually not perfect.

anyways now I'm worried that that little coolant hole on the block / pump might have been clogged up and cause overheating.

also i just noticed that there is a defect on the laso pump's casting, nothing major, the part where the big hose goes over has a chunk cut off of it. I did a search on here and found an old thread with a bunch of people who received similar pumps. I think the hose should still seal.

You sure worry a lot. I'm not sure why you used a sealant unless you were worried the gasket would shift. Even if you did use a sealant you should be fine. Why did you wait to re-torque until after the sealant had skinned over and partially cured?

the sealant said to tighten until a little silcone oozed out then retighten after one hour. I think I didn't tighten it enough. I think it should be fine though. I doubt it will leak because of this or would it?

what I'm worried about is clogging that little coolant hole on the pump and block, it is a very small holeand with me smearing sealant on both sides of the gasket it could have oozed out all over the hole and thus clogged it up

oh I used sealant because there were some tiny scratches and pitting both on the new Laso pump / the block. I think I went crazy and smeared way too much sealant on

this topic was discussed a few weeks ago, the general consinsis(sp?) was you can use some rtv but not too much and the tighten after 1 hour is ok to do, sorry im not shure about the little hole. maybe drive it around a bit an see if it starts to overheat.

Anyone have a pic of this little hole? I don't recall, perhaps a priming circuit/vent line?

I think , but I'm not sure, this hole is used to tell if the pump is bad. It will start leaking out the hole if the pump is going out, just like on the old mechanical fuel pumps. Just a theory, I really am not sure.

Could this be the hole for the locator pin (roll pin) that is supposed to hold the gasket in place and line up the pump and engine?

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. I'll try to find a pic of the gasket side of the pump, there is only one hole which is not for a bolt or stud and is for coolant, there is also a small hole on the block.

okay in the first pic you can see the largest hole next to the bolt holes and it mates with the smaller hole on the block which is not for a bolt or stud.

I can circle it if it still isn't clear

well if ur really concerned gaskets are cheap while peice o mind and having to pull it if it is overheating once you have the front end buttened back up is expensive monetarily and time wise.

yeah gaskets are cheap but I have to wait a week to get one which means more waitng and if it is unecessary it's stupid to remove it all and clean it again and install it with a new gasket.

my only worry is that the gasket maker which I dressed the paper gasket with could have come out too much on that hole and thus clogged it. I'm not sure what that hole is for still.

there is about 2 mm (little more on some parts) of gasket maker that came out teh edges and I don't know how much would come out around that hole.

I wouldn't worry, that’s a pretty big hole. Unless you emptied the whole tube of sealer on the pump it should be ok.
