Default Which is faster? 951 or 928?

Which is faster? 951 or 928? Or are they faster than each other in different ways? e.g., the 951 between X-XX mph and 928 between XX-XXX MPH?

Does the 968 rank in this? I'm not interested in Seat of the Pants stuff or "I beat a brand new McLaren" anecdotes...since driver skill makes the difference. What do the published stats say?

i think a modified 951 is supposed to be faster, but a modified 928 w/ the 4 valve engine is damn fast too

Depends on the 928.

Most 951s can give a 928 a good run, but it's loads easier to modify a 951 than a 928 soooo, I'd say a 951 is usually faster than a 928...

A 951 is 'quicker', not necessarily faster. But can be made faster with less money/mods than a comparable 928.
A 928 will always be torquier (nice word, huh?).
Apples to oranges, Harv. Do you want top speed, 0-60, lateral G's, brake HP, etc. Define your parametes, set your goals.
Keep your 968 and slap a turbo on it.

lets not take this into the modded territory, thats useless... rather would a stock 951S be faster than a stock 928S4? etc. etc.

87 928S4 has the highest top speed (if that is what you mean by faster) than any other production car up to that year at 171mph unmodified. Stop all the "oh all I need is a slightly modified this or that" crap. At 316hp, an 87 928 5 speed (0 to 60 in 5.5) will spank an 87 951 (0 to 60 in 6.0) with absolutely no problems from 0 to 60 or to 1/4 mile (13.9 compared to 14.6). A 951S at 250 hp will be close in 0 to 60 (both around 5.5) but will get spanked due to the lack of top speed (13.9 compared to 14.2 1/4 mile). There is a reason why the 928 being the most expensive Porsche sold (yes even more than the 911 turbo) in some years at a price tag of $60k+ in 87 to over $100k in 96 depending on the options. The 928 is a "real car" compared to the 944 tosser and you can feel the build quality from the second you close the door of either car. The 928 was always meant to be in the class of a supercar thus the factory coil overs, ALUMINUM fenders, hood, doors, engine, etc from 1977 and up. Read up on this link. It seems more accurate than the other ones I found. http://www.albeedigital.com/supercou...0-60times.html

I do fart a lot according to my wife. She thinks I try to communicate that way all the time...

BTW, I was in the 928 world before I got into 944s. In fact, the first 944 I got was in a trade with my 77 928 but he gave me enough cash to make it worth my while. I have taken apart a few 928s and owned many ranging from 78 to 89 though not as many compared to 944s. If I find a 5 speed 87 928 for a decent price, I would buy it and use it as a daily driver. There is a lot of misinformation about the 928 (it has ONE timing belt, not 2) and the early cars are NON interference.

agreed, but up close in person or driving along side, regular 928's are still very impressive machines and i'd LOVE to own one. maybe i'll try for an S at some point.

oh and legoland, thanks for coming out and stating the facts!

I have video of my 79 928 passing multiple 951's at Road America (and a 968). A stock 928S4 should not have any problems out running my 79 on a track. So take that FWIW.

My 79 is stock except for exhaust and lowered (cut) springs - upgraded brakes to S4 standard issue - gutted interior. 225rwhp in a car that weighs just under 3,000lbs.

Hacker, very nice.. car looks sweet. Are those 02 996 5 spokes and an s chin spoiler? That makes those early cars look 10000x better.

Don't you have a supercharged one too?? Those are so bad ***.
