Default Power steering problem

Today I backed the car out of the garage and parked it on the hill right outside to wash it. When i was done i was going to take it out for a quick spin and while backing up and turning the wheel to the left it felt like the power steering shut of and on for a few seconds. It only did it when i turned the wheel approx 90 degrees, it stopped and didn't let me turn any more, made a "clunking" sound and kicked the wheel back a little. The sound was coming from under the hood and i could feel it a little on the wheel. This only went on for a few seconds. I revved the car up just a little and it was gone.

After my drive i stopped to get gas, got back in and started it, turned the wheel while the car was stationary and the same thing happened then went away. The power steering fluid level is fine and the belts look fine. Never had this problem before, any idea what it could be?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Not the best mechanic here but, how do you tighten the belt?

Take it to a shop, the adjuster is probably rusted.

well if it is rusted replace it yourself, either way water got on the pulley's and what you were experiencing is what happens when it is slipping. no biggie at all, tighten the adjuster bar yourself. it is NOT a big deal at all, although you may have to take off the splash/engine shield. but it sure beats wasting money at a shop.

although on second though you probably do not even have to touch it, because normally watter is kept off of it but since you were washing the car, water got on it. IMO it will never happen again.
