Default How do I refinish these wheels?

I know some of you guys have done amazing things with your wheels, so I am in search of tips to refinish these wheels I just picked up.

The outer lip is polished aluminum, the center spoke portion is some type of painted alloy.

I'm not looking for concourse quality, I just want to spruce them up a bit. How should I go about this? Particularly, how to polish the aluminum to bring back the shine and remove some of the small scratches.

TIA

Use 400, 600, 800, 1000, and finally 1500 grit sandpaper. Wetsand with all grits. Use WD-40 as a lubricant. Scuff with steel wool, polish up with Mothers or your favorite polish.

FWIW, I found all the sandpapers at the local Advance Auto. 3M Imperial, good stuff but not terribly difficult to find if you have a place that sells body shop stuff.

Cool. So just spray and sand, spray and sand, spray and sand...

I think I can handle that. Thanks Joel.

Do you do the steel wool after the 1500grit? What about 2000 grit or higher?

Can this be done to phone dials and turbo twists too?

Do you have an entire WEEK to dedicate to polishing your wheels? If yes, then yes.

The wheels pictures above will be super easy to polish. Hell, you'll only need to sand them a little bit. Then hit it with a polishing compound.

These only took me like an hour to polish, and they were originally just as dull.

I miss this car.

Sysgen, I remember that thread, well done!

Question regarding the painted centers: Using the Dupli-Color paint, have you ever tied your car down on a trailer using tie-downs running through the wheels? I was wondering how the paint would withstand the straps being tightened through the wheels.

I may get carried away and paint the center portion of the wheels as well, but only if the paint won't get messed up using the tie-downs.

I don't want to powder coat since there's been discussion regarding metal fatigue during the heating process.

I have not even tried them on the car yet

I still have two wheels to do so I can't help you on that. My feeling is that it wouldn't last very long because it's painted on and not cooked into the wheels.
