Auto to manual swap, torque tube
Just wondering, since I can't remember off the top of my head - if the auto torque tube can be used by the manual transmission...
thanks much..!
progress so far on my engine/trans swap 2.5l auto to a 2.5 manual (first engine no good):
Pcar #2
air intake system removed
exhaust removed
radiator/fans out
p/s resevoir removed
throttle cable disconnected
starter removed
front of torque tube unbolted
fuel lines disconnected
electrical, top/behind engine disconnected
battery removed
shifter almost removed/center console + radio removed
...pics later.
Pcar #3
Removed battery, wheels...
But nothing else thus far.
thanks much..!

Part numbers aee different, but it could be because of the rear transmission cover plate. If that peice could be removed and the manual cover plate could be used, gues it could be swapped.

I have done 3 conversions, drop me a line if you need help.

The difference between the TT, is that the automatic tube has the cut out on the engine end for the clip in front of the dampner. It also has the flex plate on the back that bolts to the torque convertor, that can be removed. It is held on with a bolt just like the coupler on the manual cars. Take the bolt all the way out, and pull the flex plate off.

I just looked at your sig. I assume you are converting the 86 to manual using the 83 for parts???? If so, one thing you need to work out, you wont' have a speedo. The late cars are driven off of the tranny, where the 83 is driven off of the front wheel. In other words, the 83 tranny will not have the pick-up on the tranny to plug the speedo in. Some folks have drilled the hole and installed the pick-up on early tranny's, but I have not done that. You have to take the tranny apart to do it, the way I understand it.

hey todd/lego, thanks.. i remember, todd that you had mentioned this before about the availability for tips re: swaps in the past. I am not at my usual machine with the notes i copy/pasted a long while ago, regarding a few of these issues.
Needless to say, I am not using the '83 (which will hopefully be used for 944-spec the way it is); and had purchased the 85.5 for the planned task. The complete car is at my disposal. what would be the preferred course, do a complete tear down, then install? Or is the lazy route to just use what's there? I am aware of the tasks needed to get the shifter linkage installed.

Shifter linkage is relatively easy considering it will slide in once the tranny is out. Don't forget to connect the neutral safety switch wires or your car won't start. I have done 3 swaps so far and probably will do 2 more with the 3 automatic cars in my back yard. I am running short of late 5 speed parts cars so its on hold for now. I do have 3 early parts cars but unless someone wants to trade late trannies for early, I will have to wait on the swaps.
