Tips on removing speedometer needle?
i can tell this odometer gear replacement is going to end up being a 150 dollar instrument cluster replacement mistake...
Ive got the speedometer out.. clarks says to gently pull the speedo needle off.... well i've been more then gentle and its still not coming. any tips? Does the metal sleeve in the picture just slide off the bobby pin sized needle that turns the thing? THey could've made this thing maybe a tiny bit more stout. :/

stick your thumb and pointer finger on each side and kinda wedge them between the speedo face and the needle. Squeeze as hard as you can and pull straight up. That little needle under there will bend if you try to work it side to side so be carefull.

ow, my fingertips. pos is stuck. what asbout two flat screwdrivers, prying up from either side right against the little needle pushing up on the sleeve? do you think the little pin can break or pull out of something down below, from upward pressure?

I think this job may have beaten me.. first one. Thinking about just putting it back together and reselling this odometer gear. it's really not worth a week speedometerless looking for a new one. grr

nix that.. for future refference, the two flatheaded long screwdrivers, under the sleeve, and push down on the screwdrivers against the face of the speedo works... i closed my eyes, pushed, heard a snap, held my breath, looked and the needle had came off correctly.

I have picts somewhere of when I did this. I think I just pulled straight up...now I have to go find those picts to remind me
Here are a few of them(but this is boost gauge removal), but I took all kinds of picts...they are at home.
I do vaguely remember using that tool in the right picture with the groove as my prying device. A straight slot screwdriver dremeled down might work as well...

Use a speedometer needle puller, dummy!
Actually, the tape on a fork sounds pretty effective.

for the faint of heart.. you can do it without removing the needle. It takes a bit more time but here's how it works.
You remove the two screws that hold the face plate on and slide it up against the back of the needle. From there you can see the heads of the 4 screws under the face plate. A small (or slightly modified) screwdriver and just get at these. Do each corner about 2 turns at a time and separate the gauge as they loosen.
Adds about a half hour to your project but you don't have to remove the needle.
Oh, and BTW. Needle pullers are for needles that have a hole all the way though the center. The speedometer shops use pry bars like what was explained a few posts up.

As a retired pro. mech. I have had a bunch of those needles off on everything but a Porsche.
I just did the gear on my 86 944na last week and that @#$% needle was tight! I used a slight
twisting while using finger and thumb to lift. I thought that little spindle would break before the
needle came off, but it finally moved and the repair was completed.

rotate it counterclockwise against the stop. Otherwise it will keep sticking. I have done this about 15 times on mine and it works great everytime. The first time I tried a fork and I got nowhere.
