Flush it out multiple times with some engine degreaser. Acetone/paint thinner also works.

What should I use to remove the scale from the outer edge of the water cooler.

Kerosene works as well. A lot of degreasers are simply that anyway. With a degreaser, you can just rinse with water and air dry.

I would go with the Kerosene. Then I would fill up the car with an inexpensive oil, run it until it is at temp, and then change the oil and filter.

I spent the entire weekend working on this "simple fix", what a pain in the A$$. Late last night to make matters worse I snapped the last bolt while trying to torque them down. After serveral hours I was able to get it out. I keep beating my head against the wall telling myself that doing this myself will be cheaper than taking it to a shop. However after buying a new jack, torque and socket wrenches and waisting the weekend I'm begining to think it would be cheaper to have taken it to a mechanic.

Yah, but now you OWN the tools to do future work, and you have the experience as well.

I would use an SOS pad and brake cleaner to take that stuff off.

Kerosene, brake cleaner, all will work.

If you have a Tuffy's in the area they have a steam cleaner. One nearby has one and the tech allows me to use it. Did my intake manifold and came out nice. If no Tuffy's then perhaps a national chain shop has one or shops in general, check it out. Dawn dish detergent is known to be used also.
