Notchy Shifter
Seems like my 86 951 has a notch shifter. I sometimes have a difficult time finding the next gear. Is this a common problem with these transmissions or is it a shifter problem?

Not a 951, and "Notchy" is a bit vague, but I will share my thoughts. My car,150K..2nd clutch, Does not go from 1st to 2nd very well. By this, I mean when you pull back there is some resistance to going into 2nd...not coming out of 1st but right after neutral. The best way to describe it is that I wait for it to shift. I do not seem to not this from 3rd to 2nd. Rev matching from 1st to 2nd does not seem to make a difference. I have talked to others who have this same problem. I wondered if this could be trans mount or even engine mount issue. Not sure if this helps you, but I tried.

I think its the nature of the gearbox and wear and maybe its just me but the thing does get a workout.

As the cars have aged and miles added up the synchros on the gears begin to wear, especially on 2nd gear, and they take a little longer to mesh. The reason it is easier to pull the car into a gear after hesitating is because you are giving the synchros a little bit longer to do their job. I suggest changing your transmission fluid/oil with a good synthetic.

My first reaction to the 'notchiness' sentiment is that it sounds a lot like what was/is happening to mine. Sometimes it takes two tries to get from 1st => 2nd and 2rd => 3rd. It also happens from 3rd => 2nd.
At first someone told me that the shifter shaft in the cabin was worn out, then they said that the shifter bushings were worn out. During a hard run at the track at a DE, the ability of engage 2nd and 3rd dropped out. A 944 knowledgable and respected person at the track stated that with those miles and that problem, it's probably worn out synchros, so for a winter project, I'm going to rebuild the trans, with help from a friend of mine.
How many miles does your trans have on it? Could it be the same problem?

I guess you could replace all the various bolts/bushings/cup to eliminate those wear points. Then drain and refill the gearbox with some appropriate redline oil and see what happens.
