I'll say it again... how your dealings go with an insurance adjuster will be directly proportionate to how you treat them, how much informaiton you provide, and how realistic you are about the REAL value of the car. Persistance is not the key, kindness and paitence is. I'll offer more to a realistic customer who dosn't waste my time calling 6 times a day.
Far too often this forum thinks these things are dipped in gold.
Juan - You didn't provide proof that your car was worth $3500. You proved that the highest priced cars were worth $3500, not your tri color ****box. Not exactly a statement or claim that would be concidered "true and correct to the best of your knowledge."

Sorry I'm not feeling PC tonight. Just telling it like it is. The car was 3 colors and he bought it for $1800. It ain't no diamond.
My point is that if he bought the car for $1800 and apparently didn't do much with it, why should the insurance company be expected to pay $3500? I doubt any of us would buy it for $3500, and that is exactly what the insurance company did... they bought it from him.

Hmmm, get your receipts handy, if they pay you for the value plus receipts, they may not allow you to keep it, you are basicly getting the stuff that they paid you for back.
January 2000, I spun and totalled my 88 944 NA, 150K miles on the clock. I had Allstate, my wreck, my fault no other cars involved. They cut me a check for $7200 with no dealings what so ever. that is what they shot me. I bought the car back for $1250 with a salvage title. I bought the car for $3500, it was on the title and financed as well
November 2004, neighbor backed up the hood of my 86 NA 320K miles on the clock. Got the hood, fender nose and a headlight cover. The adjuster didn't even pop the hood and wrote a check for $2680 he said that the BB value was around $3300. The pannels involved were 3 different colors at the time of the incident.
Honestly, it's probably just about right, but, Personally I'd fight for a bit more, you did put a bit of effort into the car(which goesn't equal more value) but I think it made it a nicer car than what they are shooting at you...
Hope to help, good luck, Andy

because it was in pretty good mechanical condition, it had a new transmission and it had a recently rebuilt engine. interior was in surprisingly good condition.
the only thing that was bad was that the PO got hit and settled out of court like an idiot and got a different color door (still blue, but a different shade), and colored over the guards-red right fender with like, an STi metallic blue.
it was kind of a steal when i got it and i had put enough repairs into it that if it had been in good cosmetic exterior condition it would have netted that much money.
i proved that other very similar cars were worth that much, and the insurance company felt the same way.
if i had to buy a car that was in similar mechanical condition, i would have had to pay around 3500.
that 3500 was what was left over after i bought it back for a few hundred, and that was also expected for me to pay for it to be salvaged.
right now it's running around salvaged but still in good mechanical condition.
to the best of my knowledge, at least.

Rock -
I don't know the condition of the car, but $5200 is low. I settled my loss at $7K when my all original 105K mile 87' burned in 2001. Average value around here seems to fall in the $6-8K range.
Juan -
Obviously they felt the same way, or just felt it wasn't worth the $1500 in their time. I'm just using your situation as an example.
By definition, indemnity (the principal of insurance) is to return you your pre-loss state. No benefit or gain is to be allowed. Of course tort law opened the flood gates for people to profit from insurance, going against the basis of what it was designed for.
It all means higher rates and more pissed off people. I'm a true believer that if people got what they truly deserved from insurance claims and not "payoffs", insurance rates would cut 50%.

I just don't necesarily feel that it's exactly right tho. If you get a deal on a car(like I did) they shouldn't just give what you did. Honestly, that was a $7200 car that I lost and it would have taken that to get it back. If, say, you inherit a car, you have nothing in it, do they give you nothing? Not arguing, just saying it's not all black and white. The huge scam is in the medical end of things, my neck, my back BS. My buddie has been in court for about 4-5 years over a fender bender. The 60 year old lady claimed that it affected her sex life. She also had 4 other lawsuits at the time against other people about stupid stuff. Basicly try to get paid. Luckily his insurance supplied a lawyer. Wonder who is floating that bill for a frivelous lawsuit?(Your premiums) Oddly enough, she refuses to go to any doctor except hers. Oh, and the police report stated, no notable damage??????
Tammy and I were rearended pretty hard in her new civic that she used to have. About $5k of damages. The insurance called me and asked if I was ok, told them yes, they asked if I had any pain or if I had to buy any medications like Advil or anything, told them no. I was fine, especially for the hit really. They offerd to send a check for $100(and they did). Legally, once I cashed that check, I had "settled" and could not pursue that claim any further. I knew that from the start. They didn't state any of that, they were just being nice I guess. It's how the game is played.

A couple of years back I got $6500 for an 87 na with 216,000 miles on it.
Now it was in excellent condition but all they did was come out to the house and look at the bent frame and nose.

side hijack...when i bought my car there was a slant-nose option in the NADA appraisal program at my bank...only for an 84 944, it added an extra 6k to the value of the car...all in all my ****box 84 944 was valued by the bank at $12k
