YOU DON"T NEED A FLOOR JACK! USELESS FOR THIS!

I did this in my garage by myself, no help whatsoever. This was the first ever transaxle swap for me too. Taking the trans out with a floor jack was for crap!
Putting the new/used trans. back in with a motorcycle/ATV lift was bitchin!

You can buy them for around $69~89 at parts stores and sears has a nice one for $150ish. This makes the lefting of the tranny a piece of cake!

.02 there!

I agree, if you don't have a second person it's very difficult to use a floor jack.

Ebay has these adapaters that you can attach to your floor jack for around $ 30.+shipping. Anyone ever try those?

get a good set of cheese head/tripple square drivers for the axle bolts. Oherwise it is an easy job.

I really like my Schnell short shifter. makes the stock throw feel like a truck. It is a bit higher effort but not too bad.

get some help or a tranny jack. Take it from me, the tranny is really farking heavy when it hits you in the chest and then rolls off onto your hand.

I purchased one of those transmission adapters for my floor jack locally. Very inexpensive and did a good job of providing a stable, controlled platform for the transaxle. Motorcyle jack sounds like a good idea too.

I've done it a few times on the ground with jackstands, it takes about 40 minutes to remove and another 40 to put back in, once you get the procedure down. First time, assuming you are careful and don't strip the cheeseheads or run into other problems, you will spend about twice as long. Of course, now that I have a lift in the garage, its a BUNCH easier.

Regards,

Do some test runs, it IS possible to balance the transaxle very nicely on the jack.

For me it was roughly where the arrow is pointing.

The other thing you can do is lift the transaxle up with the crossmember in place, then use really long bolts to hang it from the body. Then you can make up for the difference in height with blocks, getting the jack higher, etc.

I use the trans jack adapter as in the pics. I quickly found out that I needed the car to be on the 24" 6-ton jackstands in the rear to pull the unit clear of the body. Other than that it worked great. The front/rear tilt can in handy as well as a few wooden wedges to stablilize the trans on the platform. I never could have done this alone without that trans adaptor. I paid $32 for mine at Harbor Freight after a 20% internet coupon. I've loaned that thing out more than I've used it just like the spring compressors and cheesehead impact sockets. Gotta love having the right tools for the job...well a lift would be nice also!

A 'cheesehead'(aka, triple square) is used on various parts on the car, and most commonly used on the cv joints. I picked up a pack of 4 different sizes that look like this...

Definitely buying a set of those!

So an update - the company I bought my 'LSD transmission' (as advertised) from called me. "Oh by the way....it doesn't come with a diff". I say what?? Why did I pay top dollar for something that isn't even complete? "Well that's how it is sir" So they refunded my money....less 10% restocking charge!!! I lost $200 for something that never even f*cking shipped out to me!!!

These people are ********! www.asapmotors.com.

Now I'm back to trying to find an LSD Turbo unit....COMPLETE this time.

Any leads let me know. I'm about to just park this car for the winter.....
