Allright - I went and checked my '83 DOES NOT have an electric hatch release.

I don't like using the key because I don't like turning off the car (I don't know why). And I only have the one key. If I had a second key then I'd use that, but the engine must stay running!!

`83 944 with no hatch release here (either it never came with one or the P.O removed it)

I'd like to rig up a manual hatch release though, so I don't have to take out the key to open the hatch.

You can always buy a keyless entry w/ a remote. All you would need is a solenoid and mount to trigger the release. Routinga cable would be a problem I think. No hatch release on my 83 either.
