Default ISV

Took my idle stabiliser valve off to give it a clean today (I can now confirm that this definitely can be done without taking off the manifold - looking through old posts this was a matter of some debate!). Have given it a good clean but just wanted to check something before putting it back. The valve only opens maybe 2 or 3 mm. It smoothly slides to close off this remaining 2 or 3mm but doesn't open any more than this (i.e. the tube is about 1.5cm in diameter, but even when the valve is open, only a small slit is actually open).

Is this how it should be, or has it jammed 3/4 closed?

Cheers
Greg

Hard to get a clear shot, but here's my best attempt. You can see (maybe!) the open portion at the top. This is when its fully open. (hopefully the picture attaches properly - not 100% sure I'm doing this right!)

ok, i'm dragging this post back up.

i'm having idle fluctuation problems and sometimes the engine sticks at 2-3k rpms and slowly goes back down to 800. sometimes it will actually stay at 2-3k rpms!

i've cleaned it once: ran fine for three days, then the same symptoms.
cleaned it a second time: ran fine for two weeks, then same symptoms.
cleaned it a third time: is running fine for three days.

question: how much movement should i be getting inside of the valve? it swings pretty freely in there! is it damaged? is it an isv problem or something else?

any ideas?

If you have to clean the ISV every two weeks you need to figure out why you have so much crankcase blow-by oil fouling it up. The ISV really doesn't move that much, it's a subtle adjustment in air flow, not like a choke on older cars with carbs. Sounds more like your throttle cable is binding or your AFM door is getting stuck at certain positions. Is this an early 944?

Idle controler is and Idle controller. If you clean it and it works for to weeks, then sticks, I would replace the unit. It sounds like a wear problem to me.
