Ok Ive been searching around here because I knew I heard something about not HONING the walls at home.
I don't think I need to hone them I just wanted to know what to use to buff them, so that when I put new rings in, they seat well.
I know that some people have just put in new rings, but I dont feel too comfortable just doing that.
I have not been in the engine yet, but Im just trying to make sure I have all my ducks in a row.
I don't see any reason why I would need to hone as of now, I only want to buff the walls. If I do have nail catching scratches, though, I will end up just taking it to a shop.
Thanks in advance!!

Scotch Brite Pads & Mineral Spirits. Friend of mine who bores out Alusil blocks, that is what he uses on an engine he's leaving stock.

NO idea
It had a busted Odo when I bought it and it was at exactly 119911. I fixed it about 500 miles later and it had 121695 now so it has AT LEAST 122165 miles on it.

the engines are known to last far longer than that....I wouldn't suspect rings right away, I'd take the head off and look for a problem there, maybe that is where your knock is coming from

Hmmmmmmm. NEVER, "assume" anything. Find out what the cause is, first. Start looking elsewhere FIRST, THAN, look at those bearings as the cause.
OPRV, gauge, grounds. Have you checked and eliminated these as the cause?
If so, you should have stated so much already.
Honning? Scotbrite inside the walls? Ya better learn a WHOLE lot more, before you attempt THIS.
You HAVE been warned.

What? Scotch brite pads? That will do absolutely nothing to seat the rings. The factory manuals have very specific insturctions about how to achieve the right surface finish when remachining. I have measured it using a surface roughness tester after doing the honing by the Sunnen manual and it was dead on. Do it right and have it honed somewhere that knows how to do it with the right paste.

Honing is buffing the walls. Perhaps you are saying it does not need to be bored, just honed.

....... This block will probably just go to the shop to "whatever" the walls; because after all the searching and then this thread Im just more confused than when I started.
And I didnt really state why I am 99% certain it is the bearings because I only wanted to know about deal with the cylinder walls when I got to that step in the process.
