Default My 82 944NA has a trans oil cooler fitted.. what's this?

Hi all,

I was surprised to find that my 82-model 944NA has a transmission oil cooler. Anyone ever heard about this before? Most probably the trans have been swapped in after production, but does anyone have a NA-trans with a cooler?
I know about many 951-transmissions without an oil cooler, and to me it looks like a cooler was fitted to gearboxes with LSD. Question is if this was the rule or not.

Thoughts?

The reason I'm bringing it up now, is because I'm considering to sell the project, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to let go of the transmission if it can be used in my track 944NA.
I know the only true answer will be to get the partnumber or the gearbox number, but reading this with a mirror seems like a bit of trouble.

If there is no other alternative though....

Regards,
Ørjan S

Someone probably replaced your transmission with a turbo transmission or installed the cooler from a turbo car. The only way you can tell is from the transmission code stamped on top of the tranny. BTW, ALL 86 turbos have the coolers even though most have NO LSD.

Actually, I've seen several early Turbo cars without coolers. But I think the spec for US models might be different due to the somewhat warmer climate.

Thanks for your reply.

Why do turbos typically have the coolers and NAs usually don't? What makes a 951 and its trans prone to higher trans temps? I'm wondering because it seems the only thing a 951 can do that a 944 can't is accelerate - is this what stresses the trans so much to heat up more? Then wouldn't a 968 need a cooler too, or even an NA with, say, a chevy motor?

Thanks,

With more accelleration, higher speeds... I assume the heat buildup is higher? Also - LSDs probably run hotter?

Hi Ørjan!

When I bought my 86 951 I serached high and low to find info regarding the transmission options.
I wrote down that for MY 86 cooler was standard but LSD was optional. For MY 87/88 (220HP) cooler and LSD were options that could be ordered seperately. As of TurboS, cooler and LSD were standard.

The Turbo tranny has much taller gears, so if you see 160km/t+ in 3rd, you have a turbo tranny (but you know that).

I probably have to grab a mirror to read the tranny code on top....
I can use a cooler, but the optimal transmission for my track car is the late 924S tranny with the shorter 5th gear.

Remember turbos have a lot more torque than the N/a and still has more than a 968 if I am correct.
