Default my oil saga

So i fianlly get the car working and i took it out today and i discovered something. The first session i came in and the car was low on oil. I didnt push it that hard so i figured i would just add some oil and call it even. I went to the OG racing store up at summit and bought 3 quarts of 50 weight redline oil. I'll make a long story short, i used ALL 3 quarts of oil. I think i have a problem, i checked the ground, and there was nothing leaking from the filter or the pan. Next i figure it must be burning the oil, no problem, i have someone follow me the next session and he said there was no smoke from my exhaust at all. So, is the porsche monster eating my oil? I have NO idea where its going, but I'm using oil and a LOT of it.

Check the coolant tank, any signs of a milkshake in there?

If you are still running a cat. in the exhaust it will burn the oil so completely that there will be no blue smoke.

check your air box and J-boot....i bet its the high vacuum when you let off the gas at high rpm's that is causing the engine to suck oil up through the Air/Oil separator and into your intake/cylinders. Have you changed those two o-rings recently?

You will use oil at the track. Almost everyone at 944Fest did, xsboost said he was using 1/2qt every few runs. Thats on a freshly rebuilt motor as well.

Yours does sound excessive thou.

Finally tally was 5 quarts over the two day weekend. Teh car stayed together so I'm assuming its a minor leak, because if it was a major one, the car would have blown up after all the abuse. I also dont have any cats at all (race car).

So I'm going to check,
1) the coolant (the bottle was clear, but i may as well drain it to make sure)
2) the oil cooler seal (i hear these go all the time)
3) the air box

could some one tell me what to look for when i open up the intake box? is there going to be oil there? and if so, is there a "fix" for it like a catch can?

thanks!

I would check the oil filler tube first. See if you see any milkshake like substance there. Also check the coolant tank cap. Inspect the inside of the cap for any milky residue there as well.

There is no way to check the oil cooler seal without taking it apart. If that is bad you will notice milkshake in the oil filler tube or the coolant tank.

As far as the air box, take off the J-boot. If your air/oil separator o-rings are bad you will notice oil in the ribs closest to the throttle body. You may also see a build up of oil in the throttle body itself. There could also be a film of oil on the inside of the AFM. If it was in your air box it will accumulate into a puddle near the firewall side of the airbox if you park the car on level ground.

The coolant tank cap is 100% clean. Also, where are the air/oil o-rings? is that something involved with the PCV?

My 944 motor burns off may be 1/2 quart in a weekend. I run AMSOIL Series 2000 20W50.

Head is fresh from Jan 2003, but rings are original from 84.

My advice is to check for leaks. If you have none then you may need to new valve steam seals. My 944 Turbo would burn oil on track and on the street. I changed the valve stem seal and my oil consumption dropped very dramaticlly.

If ypu're not leaking it you must be burning it, and five quarts does sound high, assuming you're talking about track sessions, and lots of miles.

Ask someone to watch your exhaust when you get back on the gas after braking,.

5 quarts is scary high in my opinion. I knew after the car didnt blow up that it was a "minor" leak/problem.

I had 2 people follow the car and neither saw it buring oil. I was never black flagged either... I'm going to do a little work this weekend and see. If i cant find anything i may take it to a shop if all else fails.

The air/oil separator o-rings are what seals the oil filler tube to the engine block. The oil filler tube is part of the crankcase ventilation system. If you look under the intake manifold from the passenger side of the car you will see a hose that goes from the filler tube to the j-boot. This is the path the oil takes to get into your intake system.

If you have no idea when the last time they were changed is, then I would suggest changing the O-rings. It is a DIY job if you are mechanically inclined. You will also need to order new intake manifold gaskets and injector seals.

Also, is there an O-ring missing from your oil filler cap?

Can you plug up the hose that comes off the oil filler tube?

I flog my 968 engine and cannot detect any loss of oil after a full weekend at the track.
