the rubber center is attached to the friction disk, which is what wears out in a clutch.. so you pretty much get a whole clutch kit.

I also say it is slack in the ring and pinion that you felt. I thought mine was teh cluthc, i blew a tranny, replaced it, then replaced my clutch but my rubber cetner was fine

The bucking comes from the clutch disc 'limp mode' slamming against the ears. Look at the picture and you can see that this one did the same thing. Finally after so much slamming, the ears just went under the tabs and that's when the 'POP' sound was heard and from there on out grinding noises and no movement. This does not mean his R&P is shot. He can probably just put in a new clutch and be OK. It's the lesser of the two evils and the first I would change. Then see how it feels. Quit freaking the guy out with this talk of replacing the tranny.

Lt., I'm local so if you need some help shoot me a PM. This weekend coming up I'm helping Josh do a front engine re-seal but other than that I'm pretty much open.

Sorry aribop, but A.) replacing the tranny is possibly cheaper, and b.) it's a lot easier than the clutch, second like i said, mine bucked like that WITH A PERFECT RUBBER CENTER. I don't feel it's being unreasonable to explain this possibility. It isn't difficult to check either. Just lay under the car, pull teh rubber inspection hole cover off the tranny bellhousing, have someone spin the wheel with it in gear. watch and see if the driveshaft coupling spins. if not, it's your ring and pinion.
