Default blower switch - Brilliant

Mine(86 951) decided to start only working on 4.

How much for part? How hard to replace?

*******

Thanks for the advice. Cleaned the contacts and it worked.

Cleaning the contacts. Brilliant!

It might not be the switch, it could be the resistor pack for the fan speed control.

Where and how to check beab951?

Anything short of the $500 AC Control unit would be nice.

It is under the plastic cover inside the engine compartment. The assembly is held in place by two screws and has on connector attached to it. Lots of good pictures in the post below. Remember to clean up the two thermal limit contacts, they are very offen the problem. If you want a description of how it works, I will be glad to write up a quick description.

beab951 ...

I'm have the same problem and read about your ... "mixture of equal amounts of saturated salt water and vinegar heated to around 150F".

How do you make or where would I find "saturated salt water"?

Could I make do with just the vinegar and would I still need to heat it?

Would some of that electrical contact cleaner from Radio Shack work?

Hmm ... I was out today and twisted the **** a back and forth a few times and now it's blowing at all speeds. In and out of the car three times and it worked every time. I guess it wasn't the same problem.

Good luck with yours.

You start with water under heat, just keep adding salt until it will not go into solution any more. Heat it a little more and you have saturation of salt and water.

The copper oxide is heavy so contact cleaners will do little to cut it. It developed over 20 years so it needs a good cleaning.

I bet the problem will come back. It just made contact through the oxide by banging it on an off. It could have been the switch but my bet it the last thermal limit switch in the resistor pack. Time will tell.
