Get a chevy engine! If it's going to cost $1000 for a new head, I would seriously consider just getting an engine that would be more fun or have more potential than a 188hp 16v 944S motor.

Heh, I know the S and S2 heads are not compatible. However people have run S2 engines with NA engine management (and flywheels, bellhousing, pickups, etc.) with some success. S2 engines have the same knock sensors, flywheel sensor and AFM, there usually is some headroom in the maps as well. It'd be interesting to see if it worked. I bet it would run just fine, maybe a bit down on power due to the lack of the nice S2 tuned airbox though.

i don't think it would run very well at all, considering one DME controls a 2.5L engine, and the other controls a 3L engine.

I think it would run just fine. The DME does not know the displacement of the motor. Just air flow, temperatures, knock, pressure, etc. Since the S and S2 use the same AFM, it is probable that the S DME maps are pretty roomy. The only issue I can imagine would be the WOT maps, if the AFM is maxed out the S2 engine might run a bit lean way up top. However the S2 only has 20 more HP than the S so it's probably going to be pretty close. You could fudge it with a 3.8 bar FPR but I bet it'd run very well indeed with all the S kit. You'd be missing the S2 tuned airbox so the VE would probably be down right where the maps might fall a bit short.

There is a flood damaged S2 being parted in Denver if you'd care to try it.
