Speaker recommendations?
So the PO of my car installed some new front speakers, which is great except that by "installed" i mean "wedged into the front door" and by "new front speakers" I mean "improperly sized 4.5" coax's"...so I'm thinking about replacing them with some properly sized 4x6" speakers, and I was wondering if anyone here has recommendations about which ones are particularly good. I know that the 924/944 isn't really a great stereo platform (nor am I looking to invest enough to make it one) but all things being equal, I'd rather not invest in **** speakers - I've got those for free already. Thanks

I used Pioneer in my doors. The depth was okay but, the height is a bit much. The factory grills fit but there is a small (1/8th inch) gap between the door panel and the grill surface. Not really an issue or noticable.

The Alpines mentioned above are very good. I have them in the 83 but don't count on any serious bass. I have Eclipse 4x6 coaxials in the 86 powered by an amp and they sound even better but then again I have a sub.

I just checked a speaker I have out. It's an Eclipse 8364a / 30W / 4 ohm. They fit flush in the fronts although I have Blaupunkt grilles on mine. I've never heard the Alpines with an amp but they look to be very well made also.

These other Eclipse look good for those with amps and a sub.

There's obviously the tweeter in the upper door. I replaced that with a MBQuart 1". There are actually 2 speakers in the lower door. Replacing both is fairly unnecessary these days, the larger being a 5.25". There are plenty of suppliers that have kits with a 1/5.25 with crossover (I used a MBQuart QSD 213). The rear was a combo 6.5" + 1" tweeter with crossover. I replaced that with a 6.5" bass speaker & a separate amp (removed the amp/equalizer below the head unit). Don't trade quality for quantity, these 6 speakers far surpass the original 10.
