4x6 front speakers in a 944 1987
Hello!
I have been having a blast “referbing” my 1987 S 944! I have a slight issue with some new speakers that I purchased from Crutchfield. These 4x6 speakers seem to hit the back of the door panel support.
I was told by Crutchfield that there is not enough clearance in this door panel to allow for 80% of the 4x6 speakers on the market to be installed. They recommended make a custom speaker 'grommet' or spacer to help with this.
I don’t even know where to begin. Has anyone done this before or know of a way to do this? I also had someone recommend going to a hardware store and purchase 4 thick O-rings.
Any help is needed!!!
Thanks!
J

there are 3-4 sets of speakers people use that fit. Alpine and some other ones.
Sony and pioneers come with a plate that give you more mounting options and it just so happens to also make it stick out to work. however they ARE sticking out and don't look stock. i would return what you got and get something else.
Think about how a speaker works, and ask yourself if 'Orings' are gonna do the job.
do a search people were helpful enough to even list model #s of the speakers they are using!

Depending on the speaker mounting depth you may be able to use the main blade dampers from a Kyosho Concept 30 or equivelant R/C helicopter. There were two styles of these dampers. The red ones are "stock" and are a soft rubber. The black ones are a more firm rubber. Either style will work.

Blaupunkt 4x6s fit fine although there's a little bit of an outward bowing you get of the cover plate due to the large-ish tweeter sticking up past the lip of the main speaker cone. Not nearly enough to break anything and it still looks fine although some might complain about not having a perfectly flat speaker grille.

Depending how much the speakers stick out of the door, you can get a set of 4x6 plastic spacers. The Blaupunkts i bought came with them. Stick the spacer behind the speaker then the grill on top of that. Using this method i was able to still use the stock grills.

I forget what speakers I used, but I cut some spacers out of 1/4" balsa wood and installed them. I had originally intended them to be a template to be replaced later, but that was six years ago...

I heard Alpine "Type S" speakers work well. Ive got a pair of older alpine 4x6s simailar to the newer type S right now in my car that are in nearly new. If you want them cheap (about 35 shipped to your door) drop me a line, they fit perfect.
I don't know if they fit (anyone?) but look for Infinity Kappa Perfect 4x6 plates- they sound incredible for the price (90- 110) Ive got some installed in my truck... I should test em outin the Porshe.
IMO a traditional oval 4x6 sounds like utter crap, and the Blaupunkts while impressive for the price aren't gonna give you heart stopping sound quality, niether are the Type S's. I'm working on designing some fiberglass pods that will HOPEFULLY hold 6 1/4 inch midbass drivers for a component set (will probably end up being 4" or 5 1/4" ) Then once I get the pods made I'll make a mold and copy it for fellow Rennlisters sick of lame-o 4x6's...

I was able to get the Blaupunkts to fit my door pannels fine. I was even able to get the original grill to fit over the speaker by flipping the thing that the grill snaps to upside down. (SOmetimes the grills fall off when the doors are opened and closed) bt it looks stock.
