I have only gotten one speeding ticket...stupid malfunctioning cruise control. I was up on Bus. 85 and the speed limit there is 55. I usually travel at about 70, but one day decided I was going to do the speed limit. So, I'm cruising along at the speed limit, and I decide to try and set my cruise control. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But, I hit it, and instead of setting at that speed, it accelerated at what seemed like full boost, and I hit 80 as soon as I passed a cop. The one time I tried to do the speed limit, I get busted for speeding because of my cruise control....****ty ***** indeed....

Oh, and my speedometer is off by about 10 I think

I've never cited a Porsche. I hope to keep that streak intact.

This is funny- Ive been in several Porsche's that were dead-on. Mine is about as perfect as it could be- it's w/in (+/-) 1mph all the way up to 127... This based on those radar signs on the side of the road... I've seen TONS of radar signs, I've calibrated my speedo by checking the rpm vs speed in various gears, & I've even paced other friends & compared notes... I guess that's one complaint about this car that I DON'T have... WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO! I knew there had to be ONE!!!

Sorry Rock- probably wasn't such a good idea to ask if he dropped his donut when you drove by....

After reading this thread Thrusday, I decided to check my odometer on a trip through SC Friday on I-85. Drove 79 interstate miles and 83.4 Porsche miles. Looks like my odo / speedo is 5% fast.

The good is I'm safe at 10 MPH over the posted limit, the bad is this makes TSD rallys a bit more difficult...and there's no easy fix?????

Greetings to the black 944 NA I ran with through Greenville.

When I bought my 931 it had a 170 MPH speedo. It would read that I was going 65 but I would be passing everyone on the local highway 169 speedway. Switched back to the stock 150 MPH speedo and it reads 65 MPH in the slow lane (about right). Just changed my tires and wheels from 15 to 16's so I better go run some mile markers to get a calibration.

I thought my speedo was off based on the indicated speed and the fact that everything on the road was passing me when I was doing 130 kph, that about 70ish mph, i checked with the tire people and found that 40 ratio on 16" rim was right for my 85.5. The biggest single correction followed cleaning the rear of the grounds under the dash. Those are the big brown wires. Indicated speed dropped at least 5 kph against the tachometer.

NC- that's a good idea- I've never tried to calibrate it like that before- I'll have to do that soon...

Woodie / Jim 7- Wait a sec- 40 on 16's??? What specific 944 are you running? The 944NA is listed in R&T ('87) as having a 215/60/15 which is 25.15" RD- the Turbo S had a 225/50/16 rear & Turbo S a 245/45/16 rear. What size tires did you go to in a 16 that would use a 40 aspect ratio?

Hey Royal Tiger, if I were to have pulled a sharp turn through my sis neighborhood and opened her garage and parked in there, do you think he would have caught me?

He was an easy 400 yards away from the entrance

The 4-cyl 170 speedo is off- that's my guess. I have one in my 944, and it reads anywhere from 5-15 slower than actual at highway speeds. Stupid VDO...

The only prob w/out-running a cop is- you have to stay far ahead enough to keep him from seeing your license plate #, or, even getting a really good description of the car- at least if it's just a description, you have a leg to stand on, since many same model cars were released in same colors- how many red 944's exist...?

IF you HAD tried to duck into a garage & he DID see you, even just slightly, you'd be as good as caught & then been arrested for running. Some of the laws we have... I understand ensuring their safety & that of others, but remember, many places have laws where cops aren't supposed to travel over a certain speed to catch someone unless it's a serious offense- how many cops do you think would ever back down from a chase under any circumstances? How about, assault on a police officer? Sure, that makes sense, but when a cop hits you, you have every right to hit him back- it's that simple- try arguing that in court & see what happens- I'd take my chances, but still, there are often some very unfair circumstances at work. But, it works both ways- check out any episode of Cops & you'll see the kind of scum cops more often have to deal with to get an idea why many are the way they are...

Anyway, to know if you'd have gotten away by ducking into the garage is pure speculation- too many variables. How'd you like to have tried & had the door not close fast enough to cover your ***? Then, maybe think you'd gotten away w/it & an hour later, had a swat team kick down your siste'rs door...? OR, maybe turned in a hair too quickly w/the adrenalin flowing & run into a wall? OR, maybe had her walk out into her garage at that exact same time & run her over? Plenty of people have gotten away from cops under such conditions, but since it was only simple speeding, I think most would agree that you did the right thing. Now, if you had been on a motorcyle...

Joel,

Think the 170 MPH speedo were made for the early 924's with 14" tires and a .77 to 1 ratio fifth gear. Of course the 170 limit was just wishful thinking.

Thats just crazy talk.

Besides, the tach is off too ... mine is off by 1-200 rpm (on the high side).

My tach is off in the 70mph-90mph range, but the speedo is dead-on & the tach is on everywhere else. Not sure how or why, but...

As for 170mph speedo, or 180mph or whatever- I've only know of a few cars that could actually go as fast as their speedo & those were the Reagan madated 85mph speedo cars. Truth is, no other Porsche's (that I'm aware of) no matter what gears or tires, or whatever, will hit the high-point on their speedo. Hell, even a stock Turbo S will only hit ~162mph & even if it bounces off the 6500rpm rev limiter, it can only hit 170mph- we've seen plenty of listings here of cars hitting 190mph & such, but w/out proper gearing, the cars wont do it & it takes a lot more tire size discrepancy to make a dif than gear changing...
