Default FINISHED:Powdercoated Rims and more..... Wheels mounted! (updated 22July)

I stopped by to check on my rims, they are looking VERY nice. I can't wait until everything is finished.....

Gloss Black goes on first....

Red coating goes on and this is a shot as it came out of the oven....

Looks good, where did you go to get that done? We will need to see some pics when it is on the car. The motor also. Love the two tone.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is getting SO tempting to take my fuchs to the powdercoating place that is LITERALY down the street.

i could probably just pick up some phone dials and put crappo tires on them until i get that done.

i have a bit of money coming in soon, how much is it to powdercoat all 4 wheels?

looking good- VERY good. i like the red lip. original and lookin good. these are going on the red S, i assume?

are you going to get the S re-painted? cuz it almost looks like the red on the rims will be more "red" than the red on a guards red 944.

either way- lookin good.

Exactly right Juan. They are going on the 944S. The red is "Crimson Red." Once, I have all of the body pieces in my hands, the car will be painted to match the rims.

The cost was ONLY $120 per rim. If you would have seen how long it took to mask the wheels coat and then remask and coat again. it was a real PITA, but the guy (Tony) is a good guy. He is also doing my brake calipers ($80 total for those, again a lot of work involved in blasting), and $40 for the cam cover!!!!!!! I believe only $35 for the intake manifold. VERY good prices.

Looks nice!

But powdercoating wheels still makes me nervous b/c of rumored failures caused by the heating process. I recently decided to paint instead of powdercoating because of the fear.

i've heard that, but never really understood it (the heating process causing failures in the wheel, etc).

i almost want to strip off the fuchs, polish the lip and paint the spokes myself....

but i'm a dumbass, and i know i'll f*ck it up.

i think i might pick up some cup II's and get black centers with polished lips and see how those look.......

just maaaaybe.

The powder coating heat damage issue usually concerns forged wheels and high strength casting. Its not usually a problem with your typical cold or pressure cast rims such as cups, PD's, C2's. Fuchs on the other hand are a question mark. They are both anodized and powder coated with strict factory specs. Before you powder coat anything be sure and know the casting or fabrication method as well as ask the coater what temp they plan to bake at. You certainly don't want your PC wheels batched in the same oven with someones ceramic coated work just to save the shop some money.

What did you/they have to do to prep the cam cover? Are they coating the inside as well as the outside? Was the finish on yours flaking off at all on the inside?
TIA
I want to get mine done too!

They blasted it on the inside and outside. The finish was flaking off on the inside, like you were saying. It looked really bad. They won't be coating the inside. although, i don't think it would matter if they did. with the way it looked when i took it off, nothing could be that bad.

I can't imagine that any powder coating heat settings woul be high enough to harm a forged wheel.
Anybody know details of ACTUAL temps ?

There have been a number of failures due to unseen cracks as a result of pc on race wheels. You won't find a racer doing it. I haven't heard any actual issues on street wheels, but theoretically they have to tolerate a lot more jarring etc, from uneven roads.
