I hate road/tire noise...and wind noise. That's why I installed a B&B muffler...now I (mostly) hear motor noise....which is music to me. I would, however, know how to reduce roadnoise even more. I do know that the Z rated Pilot Sports that I had were louder than the non-Z rated tires.

Ok so I finally pulled the db meter out of mothballs...ok I really just put a new battery in it.
This is on an 86 951 with APE MAF(Stratmosphere BOV) SFR SS stock diameter exhaust with bullet muffler.
Meter at ear level oriented in a vertical position-drivers side.(also tested pointing towards drivers side window and towards engine and towards rear-insignificant db changes noted)
Here are my readings.(5db + or -) I got exact readings but variables account for range.
58° outside temp 7am-8am NTX
Closed window in a garage directly after startup:45db
Closed windows:
Idle
60db
Cruising (40mph)
65db
Boosting (5k RPM's)
85db
Cruising (60mph)
68db

Open windows:
Idle
65db
Cruising (40mph)
67db
Boosting (5k RPM's)
85db
Cruising (60mph)
75db

Idle at exhaust(3" away)
85db
The SFR 3" catback with bullet muffler registered the same db as the stock size with bullet muffler at idle.(no other tests were run)

Rocking out to James Bond theme song, windows down:95db
At this level I had to turn it down as the high parts of that song(brass section) brought discomfort.

Sitting in the office:
38db
Typing on keyboard
45-50db
Office shreader:
65db
Loud high heeled office assistant on wood floor.
75db

Hope this helps, or amuses those with questions in regard to db.
