Default A/C problems

Please help. The compressor will run for about a minute then siezes up. (It blows cold air until it happens.) Any ideas?

Siezes or stops? There's a switch in the system that automatically shuts off when it thinks that the refrigerant level is low -- and it can act intermittantly when it's just at that threshold.

If it is siezing up you will burn the belt off and it will squeal like a pig. Sounds more like it's cycling off from either the low refrigerant level switch or a bad expansion valve. Unless you are familiar with AC and have all the equipment I think you would be better taking to a shop. The fact that it blows cold and then stops doesn't sound like low refrigerant to me; an undercharged system won't really blow cold unless your idea of cold is 65-75 F. I just recharged a BMW 328i 10 minutes ago. It blew at about 78 F (10 psi LP/120 psi HP) to start and only took 10 oz of 134 to get it down to 45 F (32 psi LP/150 psi HP). Good Luck

If it is "seizing up" it can also cook your control unit.
