Default 931 Engine Rebuild: Anyone in SoCal Want to Help?

Title stays it all, I got a 924 Turbo (still need to tow from Oakland) but once I have it in North Hollywood I will need help doing a rebuild.

The car is pristine (55k original miles) and the exterior and interior are perfect. BUT... ( ) the engine had a spun rod bearing and was taken to the shop for a rebuild. The owner bailed on the car, and its been sitting there since (4 years).

Notable parts included are:
- machined block
- rebuilt turbo
- polished crank

The engine just needs to be assembled and installed before the car is ready to go. I could really use some help though, because I have little experience. I'm looking for someone local who has plenty of experience. By "help" I mean someone who will guide me and prevent me from doing stupid mistakes. I can compensate for your time as well.

BTW, Eyal is going to be helping, but he is on vacation right now.

Hopefully the car will be in North Hollywood by next week, and I would like to start doing work on the car asap.

Someone still needs to buy my other 931... the driveway is going to be crowded with 3 porsches (944 is parked at my sisters). You can't have enough cars.

Thanks. I owe it all to Eyal, he told me about the car.

Ah Eyal. Careful with him. Have you heard about him on the cover of Time Mag?

That looks like a wonderful car and a fun project, but I've never rebuilt an engine so I might not be of any use. Good luck though!

Looks like a really nice car. Rarely see those wheels - bet it has the really nice Recaro type seats. Recall there are some REALLY expensive gaskets/fasteners for securing the Turbo/exhaust manifold. I believe there is a crush ring between the Turbo and the manifold you want to replace. Might want to get a oiler for the turbo since it is not water cooled. They often go bad if not allowed to cool down. Use synthetic oil to prevent coking of the turbo bearing. You just missed a 924 Carrera GT (937) intercooler on eBay that is one of the best options for these cars. Suggest adding another oil cooler in front of the radiator/AC condenser - you can run it in series with the cooler in the passenger front fender if you have one there. Highly recommend replacing the wastergate diaphram and internals, or the entire wastegate in case things have degraded. If the wastegate diaphram fails you can overboost the engine and have a melt down. Also highly suggest adding a boost gauge to keep an eye on things. I believe this is the first production car Porsche produced with Motronic. Good luck! This is a fun car to drive.

.. Car is finally arriving today (August 1st)!

I had a hell of a time convincing myself I needed this car, and my parents for storing it alongside the other 931 (I think it is almost sold now).

Offer still stands, as I'd like to get this car on the road before I have to get back to school. Also, the wheels are not that rare. I have a spare set in excellent condition with lots of thread if anyone is interested.

I saw that car in person with Eyal -- it will clean up very nicely. Sorry I couldn't help you with the tow. But I'm glad to hear that someone is able to take on the project!

No problem. I finally found someone to tow it for a decent $450, and although I'm a little worried that the towing company didn't have me sign a single paper I think the car will arrive safetly. Not sure if anyone would really steal a 924 Turbo, especially one with the engine inside the car rather then the engine bay.

It is going to be a big project, but I have some time and the car is far from my daily driver so if anything I'll learn something in the end. Hopefully the guy who tows the car doesn't drop the car on the front spoiler. It is the first 931 I've seen with a perfect body.

Round-trip gas money on a tow vehicle, plus one-way U-haul would have brought you to $350 already. $450 is a great deal.

I had my other 931 towed from Yuba City (1 hour north of sacramento) for only $350, so in comparision this isn't that great of a deal. I had gotten lucky though, because the person who towed it before had just gotten a new trailer so my 931 was the first car to be towed with it.

I called him again about towing this 931, but he wanted $450. Apparently my parents had lied to him and said he could do a u-turn in the street. He ended up scratching up his trailer, and he was still pissed off when I talked to him (about 7 months later).
