Last weekend while on my way to an autox my engine decided to self destruct. The tensioner managed to back out of the block and all 8 of my valves nailed the pistons. The failuer happened at just 2K rpm leaving a stop light, there was a gas station 100 ft away that I coasted into after killing the engine but the damage was done. I'll have pics up this weekend of the damage, but in the mean time does anyone have a good condition na 2.5L head they'd be willing to sell?
Also while I'm at it my clutch is the original rubber center and while it looks good with no cracks I would like to replace it with a spring centered one. Hopefully someone has a slightly used one of those I can pick up.

this is what mine looked like ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
a couple things, First it ONLY bent 4 of my valves-the intakes. Second it only cost me $180 for the machine shop. I bought the parts and dropped them off, they pulled the old ones, installed new ones, reset them, resurfaced head, they had to weld and mill, etc..... So, forget a new head just get er done!

Wow, those are some of the most bent valves I have seen!
Cheers

Can someone tell me again why timing belts are a good idea?
I know belts are less costly and quieter than chains, but wtf???
Oh, and whats the advantage of an interference engine or a non-interference type?

There are plenty of aluminum engines that use chains, that is not the issue. A chain transfers harmonics from the crankshaft into the head/other way around and causes all kinds of problems. A chain tensioner can have all the same problems as the timing belt tensioner, I would argue that they are usually even less reliable. This failure was due to the timing belt tensioner stud breaking, not the belt itself, which was still intact this time.

Interference allows for higher compression ratios.
My brother's VW is non-interference. His timing belt skipped 7 teeth last month, so we just slapped on a new belt. But the thing only has like 110hp.
