Question cheese head tools

Can someone tell me all the needed sizes of cheese head drivers for a 86 951.
Also where can I purchase them, most places I looked only had torx.
thanks!

Rip it,

They are listed on the page at clarks-garage. I have a 10, 12, and an 8. I think that is what you need. Chase down a snap-on, matco, etc... truck and buy the whole set off the truck. You will save yourself a bunch of time. Furthermore, everybody else in the world except random people on rennlist and clarks-garage calls those tools triple-squares. I have no idea where the origin of calling it cheesehead comes from, but nobody knows what that is.

Good luck.

If you are in a pinch Pep Boys sells a set pretty cheap.

They have held up pretty well when using them on my Passat. I even used an impact gun on one to get the bolt out that secures the steering wheel to the column on the Passat. I swear there was red loctite on that bolt.

Isn't cheesehead technically allen bolt? I thought the ones we are talking about (the 12 point) are called serrated or triple-square... anyway I think we know what he's talking about.

i'm not positive, but I believe you need, 8mm for the CV joints, 10mm for the bolt that holds on the cam gear to the cam shaft, and 12mm for the bolts to the flywheel. I think that's pretty much all the triple square bolts on the car too.

Buy a good set (3 sockets) like snap on especially when you are going to keep your car for a while. Find it on ebay fairly cheap and if it saves you from stripping ONE bolt, its worth the money in time and frustration saved. I call them cheeseheads because they are cheesy and suck. Whoever invented them should be shot. I thought allens were bad enough until I worked with CHEESEHEADS especially when they are recessed (can't wrench them out) and placed so you can't get a drill in there.

Google is so handy.

For people not fascinated with 944/951 Porsches, "cheese head" means a fastener with a cylindrical top. It may be a slotted screw, allen head or whatever. It's definately not a hexagon bolt head.

So it looks like Allen heads _and_ triple squares can both be "cheesehead" or "cheese head" bolts, because the heads are flat cylinders like a round of cheese.

If people look at you funny when asking for a "cheesehead bit" they're rightly confused by the request.

Here's one:

I agree...buy a Snap-on..I got lucky with the Autozone. Clean the inside head of the bolt very well and apply nice, even, steady torque. If you do strip it..Curse...and then do a search..as someeone just posted about that last month.

I've use my Pep-boys' set many times and never have had a problem. Guess I'm lucky too.

Winslow, AKA Horsepower Farm posted the proper Mac term about two years ago. do a search for his posts with cheese head or cheesehead and you fill get the "proper" term.

I have the cheap pepboys set and I have couple single Stahlwilles. Whatever ones you get...

Use 2 hands... One on the lever end and the other on the pivot to keep the tool square in the fastener head.

Steel brush the inside of the cheesehead before inserting the socket.
