So is this car worth it. I'm not a official mechanic but I've managed since I was a teenager (41 now). I'm attaching some links at the bottom to pic's I took. You'll see how minor the dent is.
$4500 or best offer
Been up for sale for 5 or 6 weeks now.
1989
115k Miles
Black on Black
All receipts dating back to 1989
Present owner has it for 2 years
Exterior
Cup wheels (7's F and 9's R)
Scuff on one wheel which I can fix
Needs a little body/paint work
Dent in rear fender (smooth, not wrinkled, didn't crack paint, easy fix)
Dent under driver side tail light
Paint fading on roof
Interior
Dash cracks
Console door broken
Only one open seam on drivers seat
No leaks, squeaks, or rattles
Every button, **** and switch works
Belts & clutch done sometime in the 80-89k mile range, he's checking receipts
Engine compartment looks clean and no leaks spotted
AC blows cool but not cold. Said there's 3-4 yr old receipt for new compressor
Driving/shifting/braking/handling all great
Clean CarFax record
Oh Yeah ... I used to do some custom paint work on Harleys and I still have the equipment. So I can handle the little bit of body work. I'll make it look decent enough until I can repaint it properly.

Anyway what do ya'll think. Does it sound good? Should I take it to Porsche for PPI next week? I really like the idea of having the bigger 2.7. I took it for a spin and it ran great.
The other car I found is a 1988 944S in another state. But the guy doesn't have time to bring it to Porsche to get it checked out. Seen pic's though and it looks great inside and out.

I would have to agree - even though the 89 is usually more expensive - last year and 2.7L engine. It looks like a great candidate for cleaning up though if you can haggle him down a bit. As long as it is mechanically sound that car has a lot of potential for being a nice driver!

agreed. lowball them. 3500 is fair, a lot depends on the market in NC, check the autotrader or local papers to see what they have been going for recently. location does have an affect on resale.

I was going to try to get him down to $4,000. Should have mentioned that.
Compared to the other two I saw this past week this one is in mint condition.
Seriously. :c

I don't think 4500 is completely out of line if it runs well. It's an 89, has wheels that increase value, the interior is by desciription and pictures, in very nice shape for a typical 944. Beyond that, it has every receipt. Sounds like it has no leaks... and it is the 2.7, and has relatively low mileage.
I don't think it is unrealistic that if it did not have body damage, it could go for 5-6k.
Definately go for the PPI. If everything comes out good, my answer to your title question, is: Yes, buy this car.

I was wondering about the airbag too. Funny angle in the streering wheel - couldn't be sure what I was seeing. Might ascertain the year if there's no airbag.
2.7, reciepts, newish clutch is a big bonus, and nice wheels. Only the dent and seat would bug me - sounds like you got the dent covered. $4K doesn't sound ridiculous to me but what do I know, really. Check some "comps" from ebay or autotrader (I bet he did) and offer him something less.

Did you take a look at Joe's 944?

It's got high mileage but has been maintained and it's in Charlotte.

Yeah, I have seen the 85.5, but I'm trying to find something in the 100k range. I think that was closer to 200k. Thanks anyway. Plus I'm looking for the most power I can find/afford that's close enough to go look at.
You all should have seen some of the cars I have looked at I swear the last two looked like someone lived in them for a year. And the outsides looked just as bad.
Aside from a few things this one really has a clean interior. I was under the assumption that a cracked dash is pretty common as well as the detached center console. As for the seat I should have mentioned I make custom hand carved and tooled leather seats for motorcycles. So fixing that seat will be a breeze. To me that leather on the seat is to cool to change. It's just starting to age and get some character to it.
Now I do like a car that needs a little work. Kind of makes me feel more connected to a car when I'm the reason it looks good. Also, if he is telling the truth, he says it's mechanically excellent.

Agreed with Peter, the car looks decent. But since you are in NC give Joe's car a look. That car is one of the cleanest N/As I have ever seen and driven. Very nice car. The black one looks to be decent for the money. I would try and talk him down a little and deffinetly get a PPI.

I guess that it depends on how patient you want to be. The difference in cost between a truly mint N/A and one with issues is pretty modest, so you really should buy the absolute best car that you can find in the timeframe you are willing to look.
