How's Your Hatch Work?

Gotta brag a bit. When I hit the hatch switch on the inside it now opens on its own. New hatch shocks and quite a bit of tinkering with the adjustments and it's just right.
Downside is, I need a microswitch because the one operated by the key on my S2 is dead.
So, how's your hatch?

mine is just at the point of opening on it's own. PO instaled an alarm with an AUX key. the AUX key actuates the hatch. (back before i toasted the alarm) i could push the key, hear the click, touch the hatch and it would open by itself.
pretty trick if you've got an arm full of groceries.....

Were they meant to open on their own??? When I press the switch or use the key, I hear a click and then I have to lift it manualy, even somethimes on side does not unlock..

My understanding is that they were designed to open on their own. However, there are several adjustments that must be made to make this happen so I suspect that most hatches out there don't open with the switch or key. Another must is good hatch shocks. If you have old tired ones you can forget about it popping open without help.

Damn you people with your late model hatches...
Unless there's something hidden (or missing), I have to turn the car off and use the key to open the hatch. I don't have the release that you guys have, nor do I even have power door locks...
Anyone else with an early want to back me up, or is mine just defective? (83NA- Mfr. Nov. 82)

It was originally meant to open the hatch on it's own... Too many people brought the car back to porsche under warranty for adjustment, so they released a statement and changed the manual for later cars I believe, that the switch is not meant to lift the hatch, just to unlatch, and an adjustment was not covered under warranty.

wait, i thought all 944's had central locking and a power hatch release?
my 84 had both.
well- the power hatch release button was missing for some reason, but it was there.
and i had central locking, i believe.
Esteban- does your '83 have central locking and a power hatch?

Orbix - I believe all of the 944's had the electric release. Look in the driver's footwell, just in front to the hood release - there should be a switch that looks just like the window switches. If you press it, you should hear a little motor whir in the back.
Wether the hatch pops open is another story. The condition of the struts, adjustment of the latches and the condition of the rubber seal makes the difference.

I've never even seen a 944 with central locking (I have heard of it). I would think its more rare to find one with it than without.
If one side of your hatch sticks all you have to do is lube it up and adjust one of the posts downward a bit. Mine used to do it on the passenger side, its only about a ten second fix.

I don't have central locking. It was an option, and a fairly common one from what I have seen. My hatch doesnt pop up by itself, but once i give it a little start it will take it from there.
