I've had my 83 for almost a year now, and I have about 6 miles on it.

Once I work out all the bugs after putting in a new engine, it will become my daily driver and should get about 20k a year.

Got it on 10/17/2004 with 175,641. Not it has 183,311, so almost 8K miles in less than two years?

My dad put on about 87,000 in 11 years and I have put on just under 43,000 miles in 9 years. Original owners ftw

I think I put about 20k on it before I put it away, then 50 miles over 2 years, then I've got about 3000 on it so far this year with a bunch of trips planned.

944S (in the family for 13 years) - put on 51k miles
944TS (owned for 13 years, still have) - put on 43k
944TS (owned for 8 years) - put on 27k
944T (owned for 5 years, still have) - put on 5k, all track
964 (owned 2 years, still have) - put on 6k

I dont like putting on a lot of mileage; causes wear and tear and reduces the value - but I sure do love to drive them....

Bought mine in 9/88 with 40K miles. It now has 223K.

Wow! 223K miles. I've been told that the 944 inline 4 engine should last until around 250K miles. Have you noticed anything that would indicate that the engine feels it's milage? Or is it nearly as fresh as when you first started to drive it?

I'm just curious how long these engine make it until the first engine rebuild is required. I too have a rather high milage car, and was starting to wonder when I need to start budgeting for a full engine rebuild. Any insights that you may have would be greatly appreciated.

I think the only other cars that have the longevity of the 944 is a BMW E30 325, early 240 Volvo, and some of the 70's Mercedes. If only people would realize that if they do routine maintenance and fix problems when they arise there would be many more 944's on the road

Longevity in MB isn't limited to the 70s... ask my '82 300TD. I've had that for about 4 years and I've put about 30,000 on it. It's at 265k or thereabouts. Just adjusted the valves last week, and it runs absolutely perfectly.

To stay on topic, I've had my 944 for exactly 2 years, and I've put about 5,000 miles on it. I deliberately use the TD for long trips and reserve the 944 for short jaunts to school, or fun runs. Now the light load of school and fun is split between the 944 and 968, so each sees very little mileage. I want to take the 300TD to 300k before I'm through with it!

I agree, the family Q45 is my mileage workhorse. They are broken in at 100K and run like a scalded dog until 250K. A lot can be said for some of the good JDM motors too. I'm ashamed that the only miles I put on the 951 are Fun Run miles but not ashamed enough to change my ways. The Q will still put out ice cold air even at 136K and you can make a sandwich in that thing at 120mph...it's really a quality car IMO.

I think if you use good oil (I always use Mobil 1) and change it religiously, there is not reason these engines can't go beyond 250K. The high silicon content aluminum processing leaves a very hard and wear resistant surface on the cyclinder walls. I didn't mention that on my 223K mile car, I did rebuild the engine way back at 65K miles due to the use of a chip which caused detonation (even with 93 octane). At the time (89), I didn't have an appreciation of how bad detonation can be to an engine and one day at a PCA driving school I blew the head gasket in a big way and ended up having severe scoring in no. 4 cylinder. Upon disassembly I found the top compression ring on all cylinders broken into several pieces! Anyway, I had it overbored and put in new .04 over pistons ($$), had the valves done and it now has almost 160K on the rebuild. Although I haven't checked the compression lately, I can say that I detect no loss in performance. Oil consumption is maybe 1/2 quart in 3,000 miles. It passes emissions easily (with original cat). I expect it to go much further. Oh and the original ring & pinion lasted 175K before giving up.

I bought mine in winter 2004 with the odometer reading 47k+. It now reads 51k+, so about 4k mi so far. Actual mileage is around 100/110k+, the PO replaced the old instrument cluster.

Re: engine life, I have recently seen some 944s on ebay with 300k+ miles on them.

I bought my '86 na in the summer of 1995 with 102,000 miles on it. It now has 238,000 and runs great.
