225 50 15 tires on 7x15 phone dials?
I plan on replacing the tires on my 86 944 Na. Not a lot of choices for sport tires in the stock 215 60 15 size but quite a few more in the 225 size. Any pros or cons with the 225 50s on the 7 inch phone dials or is it best to stick with the stock 215 60 size? I know the tire dia. for the 225 50 will be about 1 1/4 inch smaller than with a 215 60. How much would this affect the speedometer and any issues with the wider tires rubbing when turning? What tire brands do you guys recommend for the stock wheels on my 86 Na? I was thinking of the Yokohama AVS ES100 in the 215 60 size..

I am running Toyo RA1 race compound tires in the size 225/50/15 on my stock 15x7 phone dial wheels and they fit fine. No rubbing issues at all. Since the tire diameter is slightly smaller, this gives you a little bit more low end gearing for slightly quicker acceleration. The speedo might be off about 3-4 mph at 60mph.

You will find 225/50R15 is a popular choice on those wheels. The Yoko is a good tire. You may also want to look into the Fuzion (not sure if it can be had in 225/50R15) or the BFG g Force Sport. If you want to spend more money, there are always good offerings from Bridgestone, Michelin and the higher performing BFGs.
I always like to point tire kickers to www.tirerack.com - lots of good information, good prices and good service. Do a search on tire size. Even if you don't get your next set of tires from them - you can't beat the information.

I have been thinking of that size for my '84. Does anyone know fow sure if they will fit an early car with the stock cookie cutters? I know they will go on the rims, I am just worried about rubbing, hence he early offset is different than late.

Mine is an 86 N/A. I run 225/50/15 fronts, 245/50/15 rear, Dunlop SP 8000. They are on early offset 15" phone dials. They fit fine, don't rub anywhere. Speedo is off about 5mph at 60mph.

I recently bought 225 50 r15 for my 7" cookie cutters. It mounts fine. BFG g-force sport. So far I like this tire/size combination a lot. The only downside is a slightly less stable ride at speed, i.e the car follows ruts in the pavement more than the factory size. To me it's a good trade off, as the cornering ability is considerably better, but I'm sure some people would find it a problem.
