Default a little drivetrain discussion

alright guys,
I started a post about brakes and now I'm onto the drivetrain! ha, alright where to i begin?? I'll start with what are the differenced between the various 944 Gearboxes? I hear in 87-88 the S's had shorter 5th gears? Also, can you swap an S gearbox into an non S? I also love the fact that porsche put the gear box in the rear, so installing a LSD is a challenge. Can i get an LSD and install it myself? or is it easier to get a trany with an LSD?

I'm sure some of these have been discussed before, but i searched and could not find all the answers.

and this car needs to stay 944 cup legal.

thanks

Well, I learned recently that the late cars have a shorter 5th gear. (not sure when they started making the shorter 5th) But my 1988 N/A runs at 3000rpm at about 62mph where i drove an 1984 that in 5th gear at 62mph is at about 2500rpms or so. I am not sure when the change was made.

I am not sure about the LSD thing but I would think it would be easier to put in a tranny that already has one.

This site has much of what you need in the links on the left margin..

You can put an S gearbox in a non S. Putting an LSD tranny in your car will be easier then putting LSD in your current tranny.
