Default Hella LED 3rd Brake Light

Awhile ago, I installed my new (to me, used, which is why it's cloudy, and I still havent buffed it out yet because I'm lazy) lexan hatch. It no had no provisions for a 3rd brake light, which annoyed the hell out of me. I generally, as I'm sure most of you do, find people to be complete idiots on the road and if they dont "see that 3rd brake light" they are generally pretty damn late to stop. So I retrofitted a 16"x½" Hella 48 LED 3rd Brake light into the car. It's DAMN bright and is the perfect height for scaring the **** out of oversized SUV drivers Next step is to finish the second set of tail lights with LED's and put new lenses on them.

The light is centered, I just realized I took the pic from a slight angle, which is why it looks a touch "off".

Looks great! Funny you should post this. I was looking on a website the other day for cibie lenses, and the guy sells LED 3rd brake lights that look oem.

I would like to setup all of my rear lights with LEDs to update the look of the car a little bit.

Your back lights are pretty bright- did you buy higher-wattage bulbs?

Looks like the 968 Turbo S rear wing from American International Racing.

It's like $800, but unless you have a 968 or 944 S2, you need the $1300 moulding kit.

It's not from AIR, it's the motorsports piece. And to my knowledge the tail lights are "stock" bulbs, I suspect they just look bright to the camera exposure.

The hatch seals fine, but it does flex when there is a lot of air in the cabin or large vacuum changes from acceleration/hard braking.

I cant, because I dont know where to get one. One was for sale last year I almost bought, negotiated to $1500 shipped. That was new in box, I got this one for significantly cheaper, but it needs a couple cracks repaired.

MPD47,
I have been performing some research lately on adding a third brake light similar to what you have done. I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind...

It looks like from the pictures that you have posted that you have mounted the light and do not have any provisions for blocking light from the brake light from entering the passenger cabin. Do you have any problems/issues with too much brake light illuminating the back part of your hatch area?

How did you mount the lamp? Did the lamp come with provisions for mounting or did you have to fabricate a custom setup?

Btw, much appreciation for the post...I have been trying to figure out a setup that I would be perfectly functional as well as aesthetically pleasing and look like an OEM configuration. I think you have helped me find what I have been looking for...thanks again.

If you know where to look, you can see it reflect slightly off the very lower sheet metal of the hatch. It doesnt reflect up into your eyes, but you can see that the light is on if you turn around and look (not in the mirrors). The lamp is mounted directly into the car's body, I drilled and tapped 4 holes for it. If you need anymore pics let me know.
