Default 968: Pro Glass guys BROKE my rear hatch glass...

<rant on>
Yes, I'm pissed - I hired a 20 yr auto glass veteran from a big company to come out and boom goes the glass!

My son was watching and here's what happened - they were cutting around the seal and were about half way done when they decided to take a soda break. While sitting there, KABOOM goes the glass!!!

And they WON'T pay for a new one! Yes, they made that clear at the start...at least they agreed not to charge me for the screw up. How nice of them

So here I sit in smelly vapor, waiting for my ....

Anyone know where I can get a NEW or USED glass?

I haven't a clue where to start, and the glass folks checked their sources and can't get one. (Or they don't want to, whatever...)

</rant off>

Huh? Were you just getting a seal replaced?

It is your duty to take the fight to them and make them pay for damage they caused. Good luck finding the glass, you may have to score a replacement hatch from a specialist breaker.

Nope, they aren't going to be able to find a new one through their sources. And don't be too mad at them, I've done a few of these and its darned hard to remove the glass but is easy to break. You shouldn't have a hard time finding a glass at a local auto recycler. To make it easier, try to find the one that has the worst looking seals, and then clean up the frame you currently have and then get it properly reglued (using 3-M Window Weld and proper primers) ON THE CAR.

Regards,

They can get them, but they have to go through a dealer and the dealer price is around $3k.

If you dont find one local or closer (Im in MN), I do have a 968 hatch glass and frame in the attic of the garage that needs to find a new home. The glass/frame seal is not good and I took all the spoiler parts off of it.

I really dont want to go to the pain of crating it and shipping it, but if you need one, make me an offer.

I'm on the phone right now with USAA. Looks like they'll cover it less my $500 deductible.

I found a used glass and frame at www.dcautomotive.com for $830.

I'll let you all know how it turns out...

Why don't you sue them and have them pay for everything including court fees and time spent working on the case?

As scott said, resealing a rear hatch properly is a very big gamble. I wouldn't do it for less than $800-1k (again, we said properly), and I wouldn't give any guarantee on not breaking the glass. Most places will not even touch these hatches. The guy that does our gluing, said he would only do it if we seperated the hatches, he didn't want the responsibility. I've seen my share of them break as well.

Why must you resort to litigation? for 800 bucks forget the insurance (it may come back to haunt you), make a deal with the glass Co. Now they have probably learned not to touch the hatch on these cars again... Were they doing this outside in the SUN! I don't know much about glass replacement by I can imagine this would be the worst place to work on that hatch...

Precisely why I maintain USAA on the P-car as well.

I have USAA and with full glass coverage they have replaced one of my hatches w/ no deductable.

If your insurance is going to cover w/ or w/o a comprehensive deductible, get a new one, do not buy a used one.

$830 better also include the 968 spoiler parts. If for some reason you cant work it out with the insurance, I was thinking under $500 Including freight for the one I have.

sorry to hear that, I would try to find a used one and have it reglued. BTW they can find one but a New one from Porsche is 6K, so they don't what to pay for it.

Please don't hate me, but I just threw out a hatch last night with a bad seal. Glass was good.

1: remember that if its not in writing, it doesn't exist.
2: did you sign anything that released them from liability?
3a: if yes, review your sales order and see what their guarantee is, if any, and also see if they agreed to fix any leaks in your hatch. If so, then a broken glass will leak, that would violate any guarantee. Try to reach a comprimise with them, and
3b: if no, then send a registered letter to them demanding full replacement.
4: if no action results from the letter, go to the BBB, and then to small claims court.

Good luck.

Here is Oz if you break any automotive glass that is always the customers problem, it is the nature of the stuff to break and while we warn the customer to keep them informed we don't have to legally. The only things I have ever broken were front screens, laminates will break a lot easier than toughened glass.

Cheers Greg
