Default Power steering pump mounting --- confused!

OK, I don't know if anyone has any pictures, I don't.

I don't seem to have my mounting bolt/bolts??? anymore, they disappeared in the rebuild process. I have a whole parts car worth of bolts so I thought I could make do with something but nothing seems to be working.

Here is my problem(s):

1.) The mount that is connected to the engine (and is what is the front housing of the lower balance shaft) has huge holes for the bolt to go through on both front and back mounting points, like an inch in diameter, like I would need to put a sleeve in it to hold a bolt steady... The front hole has a notch cut out the bottom so you could pass a bolt through into it???

2.) The pump itself only has like 13mm bolt size hole through the top for a mounting bolt to go through.

3.) The pump has threads towards the back half of that hole

4.) The pump is much shorter than the distance between the two mounts from the engine???

I was goign to just put a long thin bolt through the whole thing and use big washers on either end, but then I realized that theres no way to hold the pump from goign back and forth in the big space in the middle of the two mount eyes then..... what the hell?

little help?

For the record, I tried mounting with two 12 or 13mm bolts to the threads in teh pump, on either side.. but since it's just suspended weird there, they just stripped the threads instantly.

Two bolts, if I recall... for that specific area.

On the pump I have, it is a bolt about two inches in length with two collars that go over top of the bolt.

sounds like no power steering for me... the only idea I can come up with is a long threaded rod with a nut in the middle holding teh pump in place... Ghetto.

I recently installed my power steering pump and ran into the same trouble. I originally used a 12mm (IIRC) socket to temporary serve as the "collar" for one of the bolts. Just after the test fight I luckily found the two collars in the trunk (thank you PO) and slapped it all together, which worked great (who'da thunk?)

I don't have any pictures unfortunately, but I'm sure somebody has those collars lying around...

I recently removed my PS system, but all my parts are out in the shed. I'll check tomorrow if you would like, and see if I have those parts.

front sleeve is 13mm and the rear sleeve is 26mm if that helps any. The way it all fits together is you slip the bolt that sticks out of the front of your pump into the hole with a slot in it. then slid the 13mm sleeve onto the bolt and into the hole with the slot, then put the washer and nut on it. Hold the rear sleeve between the pump body and the rear mounting hole and put the bolt into the hole through the 26mm sleeve into the pump body. Now that I have spent the time to type this in it might be easier to put the rear bolt in first and slip the front bolt into the slot in the front afterwards. here are the part numbers the the sleeves: 13mm - 944 347 442 00 and 26mm - 944 347 441 02. If you can't find the sleeve you could get by on the rear with washers (26mm worth) the front will be a little more effort since it needs to slide into the big hole in the front of the bracket. I would probably get the ID of the big hole in the front find some round bar the same size or a little larger that you could sand down to fit and then drill a hole through the middle of it. a lot of effort but it would work the front sleeve also has a slot cut in it so it will expand when you tighten everything up. Hope that helps a little. Good luck!

Porsche sure didn't make that one easy. I had to insert a 3/32" washer between the PS pump and the rear mount. The gap and take up space left the mounting tabs in compression if you really tightened it up; not a good thing at all. I did this after the second broken tensioner in 2 years. I can't believe they had to make it so complicated to mount; then again they gave us the wonderful sunroof lifting design.

Devon, I've got a bunch of hardware from my old PS system. Unfortunately, my wife just left for the day and she took the digital camera with her. So I'll try to explain the spacers I've got.

1. 17mm in diameter, hole is 8mm in diameter, length is 25mm. This one has a small slit down one side (looks like it's supposed to be there.)
2. 17mm in diameter, hole is 8mm in diameter, length is 12mm.
3. 9mm in diameter, hole is 7mm in diameter, length is 20mm.

Plus I've got a bunch of nuts and bolts that all came off the pump and hoses, as well as the tensioner. I can post a pic, but it won't be until later (5:00ish).

If you can give me some dimensions, I can machine up a couple bushings for you......

Thanks sharky, if i need that i'll get back to you. I'll probably just go with no power steering until I get the right bolts
