Default Timing belt jumped 7 teeth

Well, I thought it jumped 7 teeth. Then I realized that it had jumped 7 teeth in the wrong direction... meaning in must have jumped 7 teeth short of a whole rotation! The belt was loose enough to take off!

Before you have heart attacks, this was on my brother's VW GTI, which is of non-interference design. Man, did he dodge a bullet this time. We're in the process of doing a t-belt job now (which is pretty much as difficult as on the 944, actually). Luckily we won't need to get a new head, but I think my brother does.

To stay on topic, I was wondering about 924 engine designs, since they were basically VW engines anyway. Were they interference or not?

early 924 engines were non-interference... you could break a timing belt, put a new one on, and drive away...

2.0 NA were non-interference.
Turbo were interference.
Then the later 924S with the 944's 2.5L was obviously interference...

So where's the potential bullet he dodged if it's non-inteference fit? Was that a typo?

Think they can squeeze another valve in there?

Yea, a 1.8T is an interference motor. What engine does he have in his GTI? Just did an audi (1.8T) with a broken timing belt. Bent almost all 20 valves. About a $5k bill by the time all the "while you are in theres" were done.

Reading that convinces me more that a 924 would make a cool daily ride.

My bro's GTI has the 1.8 liter 8v engine. Steve, by "dodged a bullet" I meant he's lucky. Because he has a non-interference engine in the first place, or that it was his insignifigant timing belt and not his rod bearings or something. But I guess all these things take away the potential for getting hit by a "bullet", but whatever, I like using that phrase.

I just did a valve adjustment on my Mercedes. That thing has 10 valves. I'm sure it's an interference engine, since the compression ratio is around 20:1, but it has a timing chain. My brother asked if it's possible to fit a timing chain to engines which use timing belts. I had two responses. 1) Why, if your engine is non-int? and 2) No.

FRporscheman,

You or your brother might know...what is a good forum/website for GTis. Something like rennlist. I'm looking at a mkII gti for a daily. The guy wants next to nothing for it but the tranny went and the replacement is sitting in the back seat. I want to know what I'm getting into and want to figure out the best place to buy parts such as clutch and what not. Any direction you might be able to give would be great.

Thanks, Josh
