Who's running 89 octane fuel ?
Hi !
With the price of the gaz going up I was thinking
of running on 89 instead of 91 for my 85.5 Na.
Is it OK for the engine ?? Was 91 too much for nothing...
Thanks !

I used to just use 89 but I've cut it back to basic (good) Chevron regular. No problems or issues so far. I may be sacrificing a pony or 2 but honestly, I don't think it'd be enough to take most minivans out anyways!!

I can see not running premium if you car doesn't need it, but then again why not? Even if you fill all 21 gallons your still only looking at a $4 differance every week to week and a half. And as we all know thats just enough to buy you another 1.3 gallons of gas or less. Honestly I can't understand why the price of premium is still only 18-20 cents higher per gallon higher than regular, apparently the cost of whatever they add to premium gas to make it premium hasn't gone up over the past couple years.

ditto on what formerGMguy said.
it's only a little bit more, but the issue with me was that my car actually felt like it ran better on 87 (back when i had my '84, not the turbo).
edit- so to answer the question, yes, you can run 89, even 87.

I usually fill up on 87 and dump in 16oz of turbo 108 octane boost. A 32oz bottle of it costs like $5 at Checker/Schucks/Kragen/Murray's auto supply. It saves a little bit compared to filling up on 91.

i THINK the 968s were made to run 91 or higher, with the higher compression and everything from '88 i think you should run premium from there up.
I also beleive that every car i actually CARE about i run premium. cleaner burn, degergants, and peace of mind. My mentallity on how i care for my cars may be different- monthly wax, premium gas, garage parking, park further away to avoid door dings, meticulous maintenace etc....

i think you may just wanna pay for premium at the 20cents or so difference. Octane booster will net you a max of 1-2octane.

I have run all types in my '88 N/A from 87 (regular) up to 91/93 (premium). I definetly fell a diffrance for the better the higher to octane i use (its smoother and more powerful) but the engine does not knock and drives fine with regular.

I guess you have a point there, but when buying a large amount of fuel, like when I fill up cans and stock up on it, it saves enough to buy a candy bar. Also, using this particular brand and running 5% volume of it in your fuel, it supposebly brings your 87 to 108.
